"Indie Artist Spotlight: LIVRE'"

"A vision has the ability to bring people together. A vision given to some young people from the Bronx brought forth a group called Livré (Pronounced Liv-Ray), which means free in Portuguese. Livré is the newest, young dynamic group out of New York City to hit the gospel scene.

In August of 2007, one of the band member’s Eugene Tolbert was having a revival at his church. He was searching for a worship and praise team for the event. He and his cousins decided to ask some friends to sing and play during the revival. The worship team consisted of Richard Tolbert, Kenneth Williams, Ajanee Hambrick, Ariel Malloy, André Plaskett, and Eugene Tolbert on the piano. They performed for the entire week and were well received. They decided to stay together and form a permanent union. Thus, Livré was born. They later added Bria McDaniel, Darius Woodley (on drums), Guy Jenkins (on bass) and Malik Spence to the roster. The group Livré has 10 members, 7 singers and 3 band members.

It was at the Bronx Mass Reunion that Livré caught the attention of Alicia Keys Manager’s Jeff and Conrad Robinson. They recognized as with Alicia this group had something really special. They immediately knew they wanted to get involved with this group and be responsible for taking them to the next level and introducing them to the world. Thus, with the establishment of Glory 2 Glory Records, Livre is now the first group signed to the highly anticipated Gospel Division of MBK Entertainment. The team that has been put together for Livré has the formula for success for these young people. Currently Livré’s management team consists of Conrad Robinson, Clarissa Robinson and Rev. Roger Hambrick, each with their own extensive resume in regards to the music industry. Livré is currently working on their debut album which is being executive produced by Alicia Keys and Israel Houghton.

The songs in Livré’s repertoire truly minister to the heart and soul of all ages. They are proving that today’s urban youth generation, are being called by God to touch lives. The group consists of writers, producers, gifted musicians and astounding voices. The first song Livré sang together was “Survivor”, a personal testimony from the group. “There aren’t a lot of words to it, but we feel like people need to hear things over and over so they can understand the message we are trying to deliver,” says André. “Songs like ‘Survivor’ will keep you saved”. Livré takes in consideration that young people go through many difficult things in our society. Livré believes that the devil attacks the youth because the enemy knows today’s generation is called now to do Gods work.

This young, energetic group from New York City truly believes they are appointed for this time and season. Livré was born to sing God’s praise! Get ready for heartfelt, soul-searching songs such as SURVIVOR, a testimony of survival through trial and tribulation – J.E.S.U.S., a declaration of salvation found in only in one great name – and BELIEVE, an emotional performance of faith and hope that will touch anyone who hears. Livré is sure to make an impact not just on the Gospel industry and community, but all throughout the world." - GOSPELLYFE.COM

For lunch, attendees were treated to a special luncheon that included guest performances by Doris Stokes, Livre, Zebellion Ellis and several others. Two high profile panel discussions were also held during this time including “State of Our Faith” and “The State of the Gospel Industry” with Ambassador Bobby Jones moderating and with panelists, Bryant Scott, Sheilah Belle aka “The Belle”, James Walker, Esq., Rodney Posey and Al “The Bishop Hobbs." - The Belle Report

"Young Bronxites Bringing Gospel To The Mainstream"

"The 12 members of Livre all had similar upbringings. They spent large parts of their formative years at churches throughout the Bronx.

By spending so much time at churches, mainly thanks to parents or relatives, they developed an affinity for gospel music. Many of the band members, who range in age from 18 to 28 were also the offspring of a gospel group called the Bronx Mass Choir.

But like each new generation, the members of Livre had to put their own spin on things.

The group, which formed in 2008, is trying to use their brand of urban R&B-infused gospel to bring spiritual music to mainstream audiences. The group is under contract with gospel label Glory2Glory and plans to release its debut album by the end of the year.

Five of the band’s members play instruments, while the rest are singers.

“Our vision was always to reach people that are not being reached,” said keyboardist and founding member Andre Plaskett, of Baychester. “Not just singing to a church crowd. We wanted to go out and sing in clubs, basically to minister to the people that some gospel artists are afraid to reach.”

At 28, Plaskett is the group’s elder statesman and one of its leaders.

“Every time we would go to a concert I told them we would stay for every artist’s performance,” he said. “If you want people to support you, you have to support them.”

There has been a lot of standing for the members of Livre. They spent the summer touring the country and have done shows as far away as Israel.

Many of the group’s members decided to postpone college so they could focus on their music careers.

Twenty-one-year-old Malik Spence graduated from the Bronx High School of Performance and Stagecraft on Boston Road and enrolled at Onondaga Community College near Syracuse. He didn’t even last a semester, so he moved back home, auditioned for Livre and got in.

“Right now I’m devoting myself fully to the gospel music and music in general,” he said. “But I do plan on going back to school to study music theory and music composition.”

Spence’s mother is the bishop at Cathedral United Baptist Church on Prospect Avenue. He is also a young minister there.

“We’re all pretty much preacher’s kids,” he said. “And gospel is what we grew up on. We also listened to R&B but gospel played the main role, as far as out music careers go.”

Ariel Malloy just started her senior year at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, so she has had to schedule her recording and performing around school breaks and weekends.

“It’s pretty difficult,” the 21-year-old said. “I just try to come down to the Bronx as much as I can. Whenever they really need me.”

And despite getting the chance to do shows around the country and around the globe, Malloy’s preferred place to play is Green Pastures Baptist Church on Ward Avenue in Soundview, where he uncle is pastor.

“I would have to say my church is my favorite church to perform,” she said. “Because a lot of my family and friends are there.” - BronxTimes
