"Löbu - Löbu"

Think a more hard-hitting, space rock version of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' It's Blitz!

Formed in March, 2015, Löbu is a five piece dream pop band hailing from Toronto, Ontario. And while this Canadian act's sound is most definitely atmospheric, it's the band's energetic edge and employment of dance elements that truly shape the unique identity of their self-titled debut EP.

Produced, engineered, and recorded by the Löbu production team at Harris Institute in Toronto, Löbu is a high quality, carefully constructed 4-track EP released January 23, 2016. “Bauhausian,” the EP's opening track, starts off with almost ominous vocals hovering over punching bass and drums. The dark, industrial club-like vibe of the verses soon makes way for a synth-fuelled chorus that lightens up the dance floor, until the song closes out with a drive that hits more like rock. The rock attitude and lively synth carry over into “Groovy Baby,” a song with the sound of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' It's Blitz!, but with the temperament of Fever to Tell. The melodious synth and spirited vocals make you want to dance, but the aggressive drums and distortion guitar convince you to bang your head instead. And just as soon as Löbu has reached its energetic peak, the tone is elegantly brought down to the almost noir-like, Jefferson Airplane psychedelic feel of “Lil' Sis.” The EP closes out with “Horses,” harnessing the atmospheric sound left over from “Lil' Sis,” but with driven moments harkening back to the mood of “Bauhausian.” Löbu's tonal shift from energetic dance to atmospheric dream is perfectly encapsulated by Scott Sokoloski's fantastic line art that serves as the EP's album artwork, wrapping the thoughtfully crafted experience into a succinct package.

Löbu's self-titled EP is a fitting representation of everything that the Toronto-based act has to offer. The bass and drums hit hard, the synth makes you dance, the electric guitar adds a space rock feel, and the vibrant vocals cry out over all. Löbu can even accommodate those seeking a calmer atmospheric sound, with acoustic live performances of “Bauhausian” and “Ghost Party” recorded at Harris Institute.

Whether you're aching to dance or aiming to dream, Löbu is the perfect audible escape. - Big Easy Nights
