LOCKSTEP

After meeting through mutual friends and bands in the Pickering area, Lockstep was formed in the summer of 2002. From the very beginning, the Lockstep sound became apparent as its members developed into a cohesive unit. "We didn't know each other before we started the band but when we started playing together the chemistry and creativity came together really quickly," says Clarke.

Based firmly in modern rock, the group also incorporates a wide variety of influences such as progressive rock, punk and metal. The resulting musical diversity has helped the band to create songs that are both melodic and memorable yet also infused with a unique aggression and driving rhythms. "We all listen to pretty different music so it gives us a lot to draw from. We don't really have any rules or limits when it comes to writing songs," says Brandon. Drawing inspiration from different sources has also allowed the exploration of various song structures and dynamics. Fans of all guitar based music can find something familiar within the songs while at the same time tread into new territory.

In keeping with the spirit of the music, Lockstep's lyrics also cover some new ground while still maintaining a solid foundation in subjects that affect us all. Social concerns, philosophical concepts and intensely personal conflicts are all offered as platforms to spark debate in hopes that some new light might be shed. "We're not trying to tell anyone how to live their lives, we just want to get people thinking about things they normally wouldn't," says Gregg. While the lyrical content attempts to illustrate that asking the right questions is sometimes just as important as finding the right answers, it is ultimately left to the listener to draw their own conclusions.

Fueled by a desire to push boundaries and blur styles into a unique experience, Lockstep offers a combination of challenging yet accessible music that speaks to those who defy complacency in favor of taking the journey into the unknown.
