Logan's Run

Hailing from Cos Cob, Connecticut, Logan’s Run are a rock quartet with an edge that will have you wondering why you haven’t heard of them before. The band recently opened for 70s rock ‘n roll icons Blue Oyster Cult, and have made quite a name for themselves here in Connecticut since their formation in 2010. Yet another group that is constantly active in the local music scene, Logan’s Run is one of the best you’ll have the opportunity to see at a hometown venue. Whether you’re at a show, or listening to their EP Waist Deep (released this past fall), what makes this group so unique is their controlled sound, despite the passion that pours out of each note. As someone who is constantly checking out what’s new in the local Connecticut scene, what I’ve found most bands struggle with is not demonstration of their passion through their music, but doing so in a tasteful, entertaining way without overbearing the listener. But I’ve been a fan of Logan’s Run for quite some time, and I’ll be the first to tell you that despite the lineup changes and sometimes angsty lyrics, this band has a clean-cut, professional sounding style that is unlike any other. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the band didn’t let their talent be washed out by the mixing and mastering of their EP, as front-man Ethan Tollin showcased his unique voice and the rest of the band complimented him instrumentally just as well as they do live. “Gasoline” and “Amberlee” are definitely my favorites of the 5 songs on the EP, both of which reflect the intoxicating energy which resonates throughout the record’s entirety, and the band’s live shows. Waist Deep establishes a solid stylistic foundation for the band, and although they could have taken more risks along the way, the record makes me excited for what’s to come for this group, and definitely shows promise for these young musicians. If you haven't seen Logan's Run, now is your chance. And no, we are not talking about the 1970s sci-fi cult classic starring Michael York. We're talking about a quartet of local rockers who will be looking to burn up the stage at tomorrow's Greenwich Town Party. Logan's Run ( http://www.logansrunmusic.com ) is made up of Cos Cob residents Ethan Bradley Tollin (vocals/guitar), Alessandro Chille (vocals/bass) and Jason Zivic (drums), along with Riverside resident Itamar Gov-Ari (vocals/guitar) -- and the band can't wait to perform at the GTP.

Greenwich Citizen caught up with the members of the group and asked them about their influences, how they got together and their upcoming performance.

Q. How long have you been together, and can you tell us a little about how you got together?

ETHAN: I started making basement demos and performing under the name Logan's Run shortly after we graduated from GHS in 2010. The four of us grew up in Eastern Greenwich and went to high school together. Jason and I were in adjacent kindergarten classes and have been writing songs together since before we could spell. In high school we had a punk rock band called The Birthday Girls while Sandro and Itamar were in a band called Ghost of Pluto, and we played some local shows together. It's all a happy family.

Q. What kind of music do you play?

ITAMAR: We play American rock 'N roll. While our music is inspired by the greats, we put our own twist on things. Our music is fast, loud and catchy.

Q. Who are some of your musical influences?

ETHAN: I'll listen to anything. Both of my parents are musicians -- my mom is a hippie and my dad is a blues man, so I grew up with an abundance of rock `n roll music. They wanted me to be well rounded so they started me on classical piano at age five. A couple of my early idols were The Beach Boys and Led Zeppelin. That stuff blew me away. I've always been able to appreciate a ton of music, but rock music appeals to me the most. The new all-analog Foo Fighters album rocks my socks. Oh, and The Beatles. Those guys were pretty rad, too.

Q. You're playing at the Greenwich Town Party on May 25. How did it feel to land that gig?

ALESSANDRO: It's such a rush! I joined the band after Logan's Run opened for Blue Oyster Cult, so this is one of my first gigs with these guys alongside artists of such a high caliber. And after Dave Matthews' surprise appearance last year, I'm eager to see what treats the GTP might have planned this time around! Even if there aren't any surprises, meeting the other artists will be a treat. I feel quite lucky.

Q. Also appearing at the town party are big names such as James Taylor and Blues Traveler. What's it like sharing a bill with acts like that?

JASON: I'm extremely excited to be playing with James and Blues Traveler. I've been enjoying their music for as long as I can remember, and now I'll finally have the chance to not only see them live, but perform with them. It's great!

Q. What can the crowd expect from you guys?

ITAMAR: The crowd can expect a rowdy live show that's full of energy. We play a no-frills rocking set, but we like to mix it up and surprise the audience with some tricks we have up our sleeves. Our show is about the music and telling our story to the audience.

Q. How about a future for the band? What are your aspirations?

ALESSANDRO: We're working on an album right now that should be out by the end of the summer, which we will be touring on this August. Long term, we just want to keep doing this every day; writing, performing, eventually touring the world. I hear people complain about losing passion for things they love when it becomes a job for them, but music has never been that way for anyone in Logan's Run. We work hard at what we do, but we still enjoy every second of it. The idea of being on the road with these guys for the next 20 years is A-OK in my book. Wherever this band takes us, we're just happy to be doing what we love.

Q. OK, last question. Deserted island . . . Five albums . . . What are you bringing?

ETHAN: I guess for my deserted island record... I'm gonna say "Sgt. Pepper" by The Beatles
