Toronto up-and-comer LOONY is a singer/songwriter from Scarborough, who has been singing before she could speak, and writing before she ever attended school. Grown up on neo-soul, hip-hop and R&B, LOONY strives to synthesize all of her influences and love for new wave and oldschool R&B in her music, as well as reflect a genuine portrait of her environment and experiences. After only dropping the odd single release once in a while on Soundcloud, in October of 2016 she released her first EP, a self-titled dazzling rollercoaster of approximately 13 minutes. The tape ultimately chronicles a day in the life of the born and raised Scarborough resident, and LOONY herself describes the album as being an ode to her vices, insecurities, personal relationships, and the woes of public transportation. Her sound is composed of dreamy layered vocals, glittering production and thoughtful, witty lyrics. LOONY’s versatility is apparent in not only her sound, but her actual song-writing, as the listener is involuntarily introduced to her many sides. She bounces between the boastful and quick lyricist we see in “Eastbound Trains” and “Sun Signs”, to the imaginative, potty-mouthed jazzy crooner in “Road Dog” and then finally the soulful, vulnerable vocalist we see in “Glitter”. Currently LOONY is hard at work on another EP for 2017, as well as perfecting her performance setlist with her live band.
