“MY OWN WAY” by Loren Dorland

This is a song about freedom, about never letting anything stop you from accomplishing your dreams. As a teenager, I often feel cramped, like everything is moving way to slow. My mother wanted me to slow down, to “take it easy”. Right then I had it, I spent an hour getting it out of my head, all the frustration that was inside me. I wanted to be there as soon as possible, I still do.

“TEARS” by Loren Dorland

My best friend, Emily, was having a lot of trouble with her ‘love life’, if you can call it that at our age…;) I was so tired of it all, of seeing her hurt. I wrote it for her, but as I was writing I realized that this has happened to me, as well as every other human being in the world. I’ve watched friends, male and female, get hurt from break-ups. It’s happened to us all, this is about getting over it, and moving on, because if you were meant to be with them the rest of your life, you would have never broken up.

“PARANOIA” by Loren Dorland

Paranoia is about all the annoying things we put up with. I have secrets that will never be exposed in any way except the words in my music, but people continue to question “what’s wrong?”. It’s also about people getting so scared of everything, all the murder, rape, and kidnappings that go on in this ridiculous world makes people paranoid. Why live your life scared? Don’t be stupid, just don’t watch your back so much that you don’t take the time to see what’s right in front of you.

“SURFACING” by Loren Dorland

I thought of this song while I was swimming, ironically enough. I was underwater and noticed how peaceful everything was, how still and perfect things seemed to be. It reminded me of life, how things can seem so perfect whenever you’re getting your way, but eventually it will all fall apart. Just like the beauty of being underwater, eventually you'll run out of air. It turned into a Christian song whenever I realized that God is the only person who can keep the perfection in place, you just have to come to the surface and let him.

Bio

Biography

Loren Lee Dorland
Born October 12, 1995

Loren Dorland was born in Tulsa, OK on October 12, 1995 to Shannon and Holly Dorland. Loren expressed an interest in music at a very early age. She was singing basically at birth and continued throughout her toddler years, often loudly. Loren also showed a love for the dramatic. Trying to discover a creative outlet for her extraverted energies, her parents searched for a distinguished theatrical program in their home town of Broken Arrow.

At age 6 she began formal drama and dance training at Theater Arts in Broken Arrow, OK. She soon found that her talents lay in drama and voice. At age 10 Loren began pouring her emotions and experiences on paper. She wrote monologues but mostly lyrics and melodies to songs. This led her parents to direct her to music. She began with guitar lessons and soon after began vocal instruction. She studied formal voice lessons under Sheri Thompson for 4 years. She soon began developing a unique style with a definitive blues and “neo soul” slant with Pop characteristics.

Her style was highly influenced by her parent’s diverse interest in music. Loren would often be with her friends and singing songs by the Earth Wind and Fire and her friends would say “Who sings that?” she would tell them and they would say “Who?”. Loren and her father made it a game to find new singers on Itunes that had unique styles and amazing voices. She often exposed her friends to singers like “Mutlu” and “Marc Broussard” before they were even widely popular. Loren also has current influences such “Jason Mraz”, “Boys Like Girls”, “Cobli Caillet” and various other artists.

By 12, she had written over 8 songs and at 13, after her parents set up a home recording studio, she recorded her first recording of “Tears”. This song was so well received by her parents; they decided to pursue recording some of her songs.

Loren has a strong Christian background and her mother participates in the church choir. It was there that her mother met artists that were currently producing songs of their own. They were led to contact Jung Song of Black Box studios. Jung took a strong interest in Loren’s music and began producing songs using professional musicians from local bands, universities and churches. Loren was very adamant that her music be real musicians and not merely computerized tracks.

In June of 2009, she along with 3D Computer Animator Bren Wilson produced a video in Austin TX of her first recorded song “My Own Way”. She soon followed with “Paranoia” which was so well received that she began recording with a live band before she had finished writing the song. Her third song, “Tears” was born of a collaborative effort of her and her producer Jung Song. He had a vision for the song and Loren let him run with it.

She now has three songs produced for an audition album called “Perfectly Different” with two works in progress to be completed early 4th quarter of 2009. She wanted to present something that would showcase not only her songs, but the diversity of her musical interest and unique style. Loren began performing her songs live at local coffee shops and talent spotlights such as the “Roxy” in August and continues to write for future works. She has over 15 songs total that she considers WIPs. Loren’s mother, Holly Dorland, is acting as her manager and agent in developing her career.

Loren continues to be an outgoing, vibrant teenager with a well adjusted home and social life. She has a variety of friends and enjoys skating, listening to music, and like all teenagers, texting. She maintains 3.8 grade point average and works very hard to maintain this. She participates in National Honor Society and Choir in school and has resumed guitar lessons using both electric and acoustical guitar. Loren enjoys being with people, no matter where she is, as long as she can have a conversation.
