"Los Cobras Review"

... many of us become trapped in one style of music without giving another a fair hearing which is why I deliberately went along to the Railway Hotel to listen to Los Cobras, a blues jazz band of exceptional quality, the Friday before.
I am no expert like our erstwhile music critic at the Guardian, Burt Everett, but if I hear something good I feel compelled to share the news, though I have heard enough of Andre Rieu for the time being, thank you. The Cobras play blues like the Rolling Stones getting satisfaction from the original rolling stone, Muddy Waters. It’s heart thumpin’ toe tappin’ stuff so if you feel inclined for a knees up you are most welcome. I should add that Straus is not on the menu.
You can catch them at the Lighthouse Hotel, Burnett Heads, next Sunny arvo. The Blues Club have a great website at HYPERLINK "http://www.bundyblues.com" www.bundyblues.com with more bands and dates. - NewsMail - Ted Lake

Bio

Los Cobras is arguably the hottest four piece Texas blues band between Bundaberg, Queensland and Austin, Texas! (Don’t know any blues bands from New Mexico, Southern Cal, Hawaii, Tahiti or the Solomon Islands - do you?)

Made up of four seasoned professional musicians, they play a style of blues that gets their audiences clapping, dancing, singing and shuckin’ & jivin’. Los Cobras evolved from two highly popular Queensland bands - Studebakers (a straight ahead Aussie rock band) and Black Dog (a very successful touring blues band). So with Los Cobras, we have the best of both worlds - great blues and rock & roll with great audience appeal.

Their music is tight and dynamic, delivering favourites from Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Thorogood, Jimmi Hendrix and Willie Dixon, along with reworked blues classics and rock standards. Their arrangements bring a freshness to each song and they just “make you wanna dance”!

Featuring Jay Boving on lead guitar and vocals. Jay is a talented blues/rock guitarist and is well respected by his contemporaries and admired by everyone who hears him perform. Originally Jay came from the birthplace of the Beatles, Liverpool England, and began his career as a professional guitarist in Perth Australia. Since moving to Queensland, Jay has toured extensively with Black Dog, playing pubs, clubs and blues festivals. Jay also played guitar on Savage Garden’s first album, and recorded with the original Brisbane band ‘Carnival’, in Joe Camelleri’s Melbourne Studio.

Alex (“The Earl”) Johnson on drums provides the solid foundation for the band. His chops, cymbal work and heart thumping kick provides the right balance and drive without overpowering the band (or the audience). The Earl was born to a family of musicians in New York City. He eventually found his way to percussion and completed a diploma of Music (Jazz Studies) at the Australian National University, Canberra. During his professional career Alex has performed with some of Australia’s leading musicians including Renee Geyer, Eskimo Joe, Chris Wilson, Skunk Hour and The Whitlam’s. Since moving to Bundaberg, he worked the music scene with Ben Penna and Tasman ‘C’ before joining Los Cobras.

Billy J. Cox on vocals and harmonica (blues harp) is well respected throughout the blues music industry, with extensive involvement at many different levels, including the development and organisation of festivals (Bucca Blues Festival - Bundaberg Jazz And Blues), music promotion, and working as front man and harmonica player for Black Dog and Studebakers. He has recorded with country legend Norma O’hara Murphy, and wrote and recorded a national T.V. theme (Leyland’s Australia) with cajun country band “Dead Kelly”.

Gerry Devine, on bass, is the other half of the band’s ‘engine room’. His bass lines are fluid and infectious, which provide a a solid basis for the rest of the members of the band. As “mister personality”, his fun loving demeanor makes everyone want to have a good time. Gerry has extensive local experience playing with both Black Dog and Studebakers.

Everyone in Los Cobras, is a founding member of The Bundaberg Blues club, (with over 100 members), dedicated to “Keeping The Blues Live and Alive”. This community responsibility is another reason that makes Los Cobras a bit different than your average band. Check out www.bundyblues.com
