LOS GAITEROS DE SAN JACINTO, UN GRAMMY A LA TRADICION.
Este grupo recibió el premio a la música folclórica. Su distinción es , tal vez, la más merecida debido a su aporte a la preservación de la tradición d ela Costa Caribe y al tiempo que llevan trabajando.
Los Gaiteros hicieron parte de la alegría en la noche d egala d elos Latin Grammy frente al Centro de Eventos Mandalay Bay.
Los Gaiteros con este premio quisieron honrar la memoria de personajes como Antonio Fernadez, convertido en una leyenda, debido a que fué el primer gaitero que introduho letras a la música de gaita, aporte que ha popularizado este ritmo en todo el mundo. - La Semana

EL kiosco del encanto nunca sonó tan festivo como en este dia feista nacional de Colombia, bastó con que sonara ufano el acordeon convocando al vallenato,de immediato se sumó una voz masculina,llena de sabiduría y secundada por los colombianos presentes que fueron el perfecto acompañamiento para un repertorio surgido de canciones populares. Las gaitas colombianas(flautas indígenas de madera de cactus que dan voz a la cumbia mas primitiva) y las percusiones (el tambor llamador dando pie al bullerenhue) completaron un sonido vibrante,vistoso y con las raices como epicentro.Ni las caidas de potencia lograron deslucir la fuerza de una música-indigena,africana y colonial- que suena aún mejor cuando se esta rodeado d eperosnas que vibran al escucharla. - David Alcacer
Ce fut notamment le cas au deuxième jour du festival, (vendredi 11). Avec le groupe Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto de Colombie qui a mis le feu sur la plus petite scène du festival, la place Outa Hamam. Dans ce lieu, situé au cœur de la médina, les Colombiens ont plongé les mélomanes dans l’ambiance féerique des carnavals au bonheur des tenanciers des restaurants et épiceries de la place qui ont su tirer profit de l’exceptionnelle affluence qui a gagné les environs de la scène durant ce festival. manifestations folkloriques d’origine afro, le groupe dont la prestation a séduit les Chaouinis, revendique la musique comme « élément de sensibilisation culturelle participante ». Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto will be in Queens Saturday.
The Latin Grammy-winning group Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto may be newcomers to the recording industry — but they are mythical figures in Colombian folk music.
Founded as many as 70 years ago, the musical treasure known for its indigenous gaitas (flutes), will be performing at Queens Theatre in the Park Saturday, as part of the ongoing Chase Latino Cultural Festival.
The group has been around for so long that the current members don’t even know for sure how many musicians have played in the band through the years.
“I can’t even start counting,” says Juancho Fernández, 78, its oldest member, via e-mail. “A lot of musicians have been in Los Gaiteros, so many that if I wanted to count them all it would take me the whole week.”
Despite its legendary status, Los Gaiteros only recently recorded its first album, “Un Fuego de Sangre Pura,” which won the 2007 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album.
The members attended the awards ceremony in Las Vegas at the invitation of Puerto Rican rappers Calle 13, with whom they performed live the duo’s song “Pa’l Norte.”
“We met because they came to our land in Colombia,” says Manuel Antonio (Toño) García, who joined the band in 1986. “They encouraged us to go, and we went together. They also won and later we visited them in their home. We’re friends.”
Fernández and García, also in his late 70s, are proud heirs of a tradition founded in the 1940s by musician Toño Fernández in the Caribbean coastal town of San Jacinto.
The founder’s nephew, Juancho Fernández, is keeping alive his spirit. Another nephew, Nicolás Hernández, is a member of the group but won’t be performing in Queens due to illness.
Members of Colombia’s native Kogi tribe, Los Gaiteros combine indigenous instruments — notably gaitas and maracas — and African drums.
Their music, a tradition dating back to the early 19th century, is the precursor of cumbia, one of Colombia’s most exportable rhythms. In recent years, Colombian folk music has resurged thanks to young rock-infused musicians like Carlos Vives and Juanes.
“It’s different,” says Fernández about modern cumbia, but adds, “we have taught many of them — we’ve been their masters.”
Now, thanks to their Latin Grammy win and hip-hop friendships, these gray-haired men can boast as much hipness as any of their disciples.
“[The Latin Grammy] recognizes the work of all the people who started this music, and all of us who’ve been playing it and fought for it,” says García.
“Finally the day arrived for us to get this award, and now we have to keep playing so they don’t forget us.”

Deep in the Montes de María, on the shores of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, with the advent of the Spanish conquest and the arrival of the slaved African population, the sound of a new race was born. The native Kogi tribe descended from the snow-capped peaks with their flutes imitating the song of the birds, slaves introduced the overpowering cadence of their drums, and the Spaniards imposed their melancholic song to give birth to gaita music cradled in the tiny town of San Jacinto. Time slowly gave shape to the gaiteros as they sang to life, love, and suffering, as women’s hips could not help following the drumbeat, and as listeners’ souls would give in to the melancholic airs of the gaitas or reed flutes. Centuries of music and rum created Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, the greatest maestros of this tradition.
Legend has it that Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto were formed around 1930. Founded by Miguel Antonio “Toño” Fernandez, they have preserved and disseminated their art for over five generations. Passing the torch from father to son, from uncle to nephew, this group has become one of Colombia’s cultural treasures and the living expression of Latin America’s history of strength, passion and survival. Today, their eldest members, Toño García and Juancho Fernandez, each over 77 years of age, lead the shining young heirs of this new tradition. Once on stage, these seven musicians come to life as the rhythm and strength of history begins to flow through their veins. Their most recent album, Un Fuego de Sangre Pura (Fire in the Blood), from the Smithsonian Folkways Series Recordings of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., won the Latin Grammy Award 2007 for Best Traditional Album competing against highly recognized artists such as Muñequitos de Matanzas from Cuba. Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, a century of tradition inspired by the passion of a lifetime.

En las faldas de los Montes de María, a orillas del caribe colombiano, con la llegada de los españoles y los esclavos africanos, se engendró el sonido de una nueva raza. El indígena kogi bajó de los nevados con sus flautas imitando el sonido de los pájaros, el negro llegó con la cadencia de sus tambores, y el español se impuso con su melancólico canto. De ahí nació la música de gaita y el pequeño pueblo de San Jacinto fue su cuna.
Los gaiteros se fueron creando con los años, le cantaban a la vida, al dolor y al amor, las cinturas de las mujeres no resistían al repique de sus tambores, y el alma se quebraba ante los aires melancólicos que salían de las gaitas de palo de cardón. Siglos de gaita, música y ron crearon a Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, los más grandes maestros de esta tradición.
La leyenda dice que Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto se formaron alrededor de 1930. Fundados por Miguel Antonio “Toño” Fernández, han logrado conservar y difundir su arte durante más de cinco generaciones. Pasando su maestría de padre a hijo, de tío a sobrino, este grupo se ha convertido en uno de los tesoros culturales de Colombia y la expresión viva de una historia latinoamericana de fuerza, sobre vivencia y pasión.
Hoy, Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto son liderados por los viejos maestros Toño García y Juancho Fernández, de más de 78 años de edad, quienes son acompañados de los herederos jóvenes de esta gran música. Son siete de los más increíbles músicos de este género que al subirse a un escenario les fluye el ritmo y la fuerza de la historia por sus venas.
Su más reciente trabajo discográfico "Un Fuego de Sangre Pura" de la disquera Folkways Recordings del Smithsonian Institute de Washington fue galardonado con el Premio Grammy Latino 2007 a Mejor Álbum Tradicional por encima de otros reconocidos nominados como Los Muñequitos de Matanzas de Cuba.
