Los Pocos Locos
Reviewed by: Stephen L. Robbins

It was a cold November morning when I first listened to Los Pocos Locos' self-titled CD. The cold didn't last long, though, as the high energy music warmed me up more quickly than a Dick Dale glissando.

I'm going to state right up front that Los Pocos Locos is an excellent CD. It's filled to the brim with a delicious brew of surf, garage and coolness. Los Pocos Locos is good to the very last drop. And the band? They are good, too. No, let me rephrase that ... they are top-notch.

Los Pocos Locos are:

Dirty Sanchez: Lead Guitar and Keyboards

Big Pedro: Rhythm Guitar

Maximo Burrito: Bass

Petey Pequano: Drums/Percussion

They bill themselves as a surf/alternative/garage band. That's an accurate (although modest) billing, as their music runs the surf/alternative/garage gamut and many points in between. It keeps the listener involved with an ever-changing musical scenery.

There are fifteen tracks (plus a bonus sixteenth cut) on Los Pocos Locos. There are no 'B' sides. Every song stands on its own and delivers something unique. All tracks are instrumental except for Besame Mucho.

One of the significant attributes, and it's a very important attribute, is that all tracks are radio length. Los Pocos Locos know how to deliver their musical messages with power, clarity and finality ... in delicious bite-sized morsels.

Riptide opens the show in a big way. It's a high-velocity, powerful surf tune that lets you know you're in for a treat.

Nite Rider conjurs up a midnight run, headlights shining on a highway to nowhere and a phantom driver deadheading to somewhere beyond the next horizon.

Spy Vs. Spy is cloak and dagger all the way. Cool, gutsy, fuzzed up foreign intrigue tune.

Mexicali has a smooth south of the border feeling, highlighting the band's versatility. Nice, relaxing, Margarita style song.

Crystal Ship - Beautiful slow song. This is belly rubbing music with just the right amount of distortion to make you melt in each other's arms.

2 Ft. Overhead kicks in the afterburners. It's a powerful surf/metal explosion.

Amadeus opens with a gentle wave of arpeggios. Then it hits ... twelve cups of coffee and the caffeine shifts 'em into overdrive. Los Pocos Locos leave Mozart in the dust.

Lazy Claim - Imagine a tropical island, your favorite beverage, a beautiful woman and no taxes. Daydream music at its best.

Agent No. 9 - If I were a secret agent chasing Dr. No across the continents, this is the 007 mood setting tune I'd want to have pouring out of my spymobile's speakers.

Luca Brasi - Lotsa fuzz, lotsa energy, lotsa fun, fun, fun.

Besame Mucho is the only song with words. It's interesting to note that it retains a south of the border feeling while getting it on with fuzzed-up guitars, double picking and much power. Cool song. Cool vocals.

Spanish Surf opens with a Malaguena style acoustic guitar solo and quickly explodes into an all-out surf/metal attack. I can imagine a fifty foot wall of water, with two dozen hungry sharks, chasing an unlucky surfer. Killer track.

Paint It Black is a very powerful, heavy metal rendition of The Rolling Stones classic. It comes at you like a runaway train. Cool, cool, cool.

Hang Loose - Despite the title, Hang Loose has an in-your-face, don't-f**k-with-me attitude. This would be an excellent tune for MMA/UFC fighters.

Ride The Lightning - Surfy and spacey, with a load of fuzz. Much double picking, slides and horsepower.

There is a bonus track at the end of the CD which runs 1:19. It reminds me of tooling around the beach in an old jalopy, looking for clamshells, not a care in the world.

Los Pocos Locos is an outstanding CD and one I highly recommend for your collection. If you like surf, power 'n' fuzz, you'll love Los Pocos Locos.

Bio

Imagine Dick Dale turned Spanish Mariachi. Then add in some Ventures and a healthy dose of The Animals. You have Los Pocos Locos!
LPL has an uncanny stage presence - dressed in sombreros, fake mustaches, and panchos, the stage show is all energy.
LPL has a knack for turning the most ordinary, boring watering holes into partying mariachi-surf fiestas! The audience becomes a part of the act with fake mustaches, sombreros, and other mariachi paraphenalia handed out prior to performances. This is an act different to all others! PURE ENTERTAINMENT.

Los Pocos Locos are quite the seasoned entertainers having traveled and toured around the northeast, southeast, and California. The band has recently embarked on a mini-tour of Southern California in September and are currently open for booking in the Spring and Summer. Gracious!
