Bio
Los Renaissance Men was created by producer Scott Siler and drummer Jon Taylor with the idea that a new energetic sound could be achieved by combining dense computer arrangements with driving, melodic drums. The two composed tirelessly for months until they decided it was time to bring other members into the fold.
Over a period of months, the two were joined by bassist Graham Lapp, Guitarist Kirsten Carey, and Saxophonist Yuma Uesaka, adding new layers of complexity and intrigue to the group's sound. The same foundation still holds, with dense arrangements being propelled from section to section by shifting rhythmic patterns, but the new members have given more room for high level collective improvisation, now a cornerstone of the group's sound. The result is very energetic, danceable, and thought provoking tunes that appeal to a wide audience.
Traces of electronic artists Dan Deacon, The Black Dog, and Flying Lotus are evident, and the group takes great influence from the writing styles of Tortoise, Battles, The Melvins, and Steve Reich. Improv theory found in modern jazz groups such as Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band and the Bad Plus are easily heard. The result is an amalgam of sounds and styles that fit together neatly in a genre-defying sound.
