New Music Spotlight
October 2009 Edition

Scott Becker

Scott Becker

Musician Scott Becker is a master of the electric guitar. The singer/songwriter has created an original and new flavor that blends several genres into one delicious funky sound that Jazz, Blues, R&B, and World fans will find irresistible. Songs like the title track song "Time and Money" and "Sapphire" are going to show how talented this musician is when fans take a listen to his music. In this October spotlight with our Webzine, Scott speaks about his music and we learn a few surprises of our own about the artist. Enjoy!

Isaac: Hi Scott, thank you for taking the time to complete this interview. Let's get started. What has been the best part of 2009 musically so far and what do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment in 2009?

Scott: I did a CD release show several months ago with 3 exceptional musicians. Playing for an audience always is a joyous experience. I recently read saxophonist Wayne Shorter's biography and he tells how Miles Davis told him that Shorter was on the stage to entertain Miles and that the audience will come along for the ride. I like to think that things are a bit more democratic; that we are there to entertain each other but that is all about making joyful sounds and entertaining each other.

My biggest accomplishment for 2009 so far has been completed my new CD: Time and Money. I like to say that it is the product of the last several years and the last several guitars.

Isaac: Describe the music scene in your area.

Scott: I am fortunate to live in Austin, Texas, the live music capital of the world. It's not only great for the caliber of musicians here but also for the caliber of the people who listen to and support music here.

Isaac: What has been the best venue to perform at and why?

Scott: I would have to say that I like to play at venues where people can sit and have a drink, perhaps have some food even bring their families. In Austin, Jovitas is hard to beat. Music is great family activity and has always been for mine. My daughter has a great set of pipes!

Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why.

Scott: I have always been a huge fan of Steely Dan. There are a lot of elements of Jazz, Blues, R&B, and World music in my own music. Of course, I am a huge fan of Clapton, Hendrix, Duane Allman, and Jimmy Page. I enjoy Miles, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. It's all about the great tunes and the great guitar tones for me.

Isaac: Let's discuss about what you believe you bring to the music industry that is new and original.

Scott: I play an early 1960s hollow body guitar that gives me a fat, woody tone. I like to think that I write and play music that synthesizes the kinds of music that I have always loved with a good groove, cool guitar licks and catchy lyrics.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would that musician/band be and why would you select that artist/band?

Scott: These days I am a huge Radiohead fan and a BIG fan of Jack White. Those guys are playing cutting edge Rock & Roll. On the Jazzy instrumental front, I would love to work with Chick Corea.

Isaac: If you had to describe your music to others, what would be your answer?

Scott: My music is a blend of Jazz, Blues, R&B, and World Music. The songs have a good groove with catchy lyrics and some cool guitar kicks.

Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from fans about your music?

Scott: Some people are surprised that I have reasonable chops. I am a doctor by day and musician by night. I tell them that I have been playing guitar a lot longer that I have been doctoring. I think that most people who listen like the blend of the musical styles that I have on my palette.

Isaac: Where can fans access your music online?

Scott: My website is located at:

Complete versions of most of the tunes on "Time and Monday" are on MySpace at:

Isaac: In five years, you will…

Scott: In five years, I will be actively playing in the Austin area and writing music for some of the cool guitars that live at my house. Hopefully, these will turn into the next CD. I have been doing some interesting stuff on the baritone guitar and the fretless guitar which can be heard on "Time and Money". There may even be an acoustic project in the works.

Isaac: Final thoughts and thank you from Scott Becker…

Scott: Thanks to everyone for listening and to my family and friends for indulging my guitar habit for all this time. I just hope that my tunes can bring a smile to your face now and again.
