Comments on the audio release: Lou Mars - Broken in General

...very cool tracks here Lou..at times, there's almost a nu-wave early 80's synth vibe to the songs..lovin those twisty chord progressions for "is this reality", and a great electro vibe to "put away". tight playing and loads of good catchy grooves. Tasty!!
MikeWhitePresents

Heard you on ReverbNation radio and became a fan. Followed you on Twitter too.
Keep up the good work!

Nice sound on these songs. Good Feel to all of them. Nice Vocals and Instrumentation hee. Kinda has a 80's Vibe to them. Played everything today. My picks for today: Put Away, Wonder, Broken Toys, Teaser and Treadmill.
From: Artist - Extreme Dream

"Looking for an answer" reminds me of Pink Floyd "Learning to fly", totally different but similar feel. Vocals remind me a bit of Michael Nesmith, a great songwriter. You have a "new" classic sound. Great job. cheers.
From: Artist - Spike James and the Names

"Chico Drummer Atempts World Record"

A Chico man began his quest Thursday morning to get his name in the Guinness book of World Records. Lou Mars, a professional drummer, will try to drum for 121 consecutive hours or five days plus one hour. Along with the physical and psychological challenges, this attempt will require sound strategy.

At 7:30 Thursday morning the drum sounded. Lou Mars's quest for immortality was underway. And the person who knows him best says he's ready. Lou's wife Karen Maraschiello said "He was ready to go. He was really excited. We had to kind of slow him down a little bit on the drums because he had a lot of adrenalin going."

Adrenaline that will be needed if Lou hopes to fight off the physical and mental beating his body and mind will take to drum consecutively for 121 hours, although rules permit one 5-minute break each hour, which he can carry over for a longer break. The plan is to go 40 hours non-stop accumulating 200 rest minutes.

Lou's trainer Robb Wolf said "And then we're going to pull 120 minutes out of that, put him down and rest him very thoroughly, feed and water him, give him a shower and then get him back out on it."

A bed, shower and bathroom are next to the stage. Guinness standards require Lou to play real songs, he can't just tap on the drum to fill time. That's why every beat of the drum, every clang of the symbol is recorded, and the clock is watched closely in case Guinness officials have any questions.

Wolf aside "Like we have a very thorough documentation process that needed legal review to make sure we have all of our ducks in a row because you don't want to lose on a technicality." Not only will Guinness be watching, so will the entire world as the record-setting attempt is being streamed live all over the globe. "We have people in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand in addition to people all over the United States following this. So we have people literally all over the world following this." By the way, he's playing a lot of Beatles, Zeppelin and Stones. You can cheer him on by going to the Cross-Fit-Norcal Gym on Entler Avenue in person. But only during the daylight hours they'll lock the doors at night. You can follow Lou's progress with the rest of the world by watching a "live" stream of the record attempt by clicking on http://loumarsdrums.com/worldrecord/index.html - KNVN NBC

"Showmanship and the Performing Drummer"

What exactly is a show drummer? Is it flash and speed and twirling drumsticks, or does it require outlandish costumes and over-sized drum kits?
In the early days of jazz and big band music, drummers like Louie Bellson and Gene Krupa were so revered and respected for their drumming prowess and showmanship they would have their own names painted on the front heads of their drum kits alongside the names of their bandleaders.
Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr originally had his name on his bass drum before joining the Beatles and putting his band’s name there instead. Although Starr was not a flashy drummer, his drumming was almost immediately recognizable because he had developed his own style. He was, and still is, definitely a showman.
I remember a concert I saw way back in 1980. It was the band Rush. I had idolized drummer Neil Peart, along with the rest of the band, since their beginning in the mid 70s and seeing them live was like a dream come true. Peart’s set was just as I imagined—a drummer’s throne surrounded by all manner of sparkling drums and percussion. He could virtually turn in any direction and there would be something there to play.
As they launched into their current hit “Tom Sawyer,” I was floored by their sound and Peart’s ability to play rhythms and fills that many drummers strained to copy. Then, in the middle of one of their songs, the unthinkable happened—Peart dropped a stick. It literally went flying across the stage, luckily missing guitarist Alex Lifeson and singer/bassist Geddy Lee.
Without missing a beat, Peart held an open palm behind his head, and from between the backstage curtains a drumstick appeared and was placed directly in Peart’s hand. He continued playing as if nothing had happened and I eventually picked up my dropped jaw from the floor. Now that was showmanship. To be so meticulously organized to the point that Peart had but to hold out his open palm was a tribute to the merits of practice.
Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, between playing his complex drum beats and incredibly difficult fills, had the habit of banging his giant gong with flaming beaters. He would often play his kit bare-handed just to get a different sound.

Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick likes to use a pair of gigantic drumsticks, among other things, when playing live.

Professional drummer Lou Mars, who has been compared to The Who’s Keith Moon, says “I’m a show drummer, but more specifically I think my style is like a controlled crash.” Mars, the grand prize winner of the Dixon Drums’ “Drum your way to Hollywood” Contest, also set the second longest Marathon Drumming World Record at 108.5 hours in January 2010. But showmanship doesn’t have to be all about tricks with flaming beaters or huge drumsticks.

A friend of mine, a drummer by the name of Martin Parker, has played with artists like Ricky Scaggs, Vince Gill, Earl Scruggs, Patti Loveless and Allison Krause and never so much as twirls a drumstick. Yet, he continues to get calls to go on tour because he does one thing very, very well—he drums.
As an entertainer, it’s up to you to make sure the audience gets what it came to see—a show. But performing is also a balancing act that requires you to maintain artistic integrity and play to the best of your ability.

"Dixon Drum Players"

Lou came to our attention when he won the Grand Prize in our Drum Your Way to Hollywood contents. Lou's great performance style helped him stand out to the judges with his exaggerated hi hat stomping leg kick, head flailing, jumping off the throne, almost-falling-down while crash-cymbal-muting style. He won a Dixon Outlaw in Tobacco Burst Finish. With this renewed interest in drumming and new drum set he has gone on to do some great things. Lou record drums and appear in the music video for Warner Brothers Recording Artist Sharon MaRee on her track "The Way You Love Me." The track was nominated for a Grammy in 2010. For his next feat Lou attempt to break the Guinness Book of Worlds Records for Marathon Drumming. Dixon Drums provided Lou with a Dixon Demon in Urban Camo finish to play during his attempt. Lou raffled off the kit to a lucky winner and gave the proceeds to Little Kids Rock, an organization that raises money to get musical instruments for kids. Lou's body gave out after 108.5 hours, just 12 hours short of what was needed to break the record. The training and the ordeal of the event caused Lou to rethink his lifestyle. He started eating more healthy foods, exercised regularly, and quit drinking. He is currently producing a documentary about this experience. Lou is a great friend to the entire Dixon Drums team. - Dixon Drums
