"La Mer ~ Closer"

Los Angeles based singer/songwriter, La Mer, has had a exciting, deep, and tumultuous relationship with her music. From her time in the bright lights of New York City’s Broadway to giving her voice to the Brooklyn and New Orleans band, The Mumbles, she’s toured the United States, parts of western Europe, and released several EP’s. After taking a break from performing and touring, La Mer found herself taking time to explore her songwriting craft more in-depth, creating space for introspection, exploration and self-discovery. Returning to her native home in Los Angeles and immersing herself into the gritty beach culture of Venice, La Mer has honed in on a distinct signature sound that is both sweet and sexy, warm and insightful. Her collaboration with Grammy Award winning producer and engineer, Andy Kravitz, solidified the direction of her newest venture, “Anchor Baby” due out in June 2013. - Who Needs a Genre?

"Hula Pop Teardrops"

The chanteuse known as La Mer is a self-described “gritty hula girl” living in Venice Beach. That may be her day job, because at night she becomes a pop songstress refusing to let her songs become monogamous to a single genre (pop rock, soul, electro). Accenting each of her tracks is a lulling voice that has the uncanny ability to be angelic and sexy at the same time. Currently working with producer Andy Kravitz at his Venice Beach studio, her new album will be released next Spring. But for now you can enjoy the dreamy soul lullaby “Teardrops”off her self-titled debut EP: - Free Bike Valet

"Exclusive Interview"

Your new EP ‘Anchor Baby’ is out in June. How do you feel about the record now that it’s finished and about to released to the public?
I’m ready! I’ve learned so much throughout the creation of this record, not only through the writing… also the production process and the insanity that goes along with it. Now it’s finally time to release what I have been holding onto. The best part is giving it away, it’s liberating!

Also, I sing these songs at local gigs and continue to receive a really warm response from people wanting to listen to more. I am thrilled they will be able to.

What are the themes and messages running through ‘Anchor Baby’?
The record definitely embraces my name, which means the sea in french. The songs are a lot about learning to go with the flow in some way… ride the waves that life brings, both the easy riders and the more challenging ones…have trust and flow~

Closer and Red Balloon are a lot about learning to live for the moment and be light hearted. I tend to take myself a lil too seriously at times. These songs remind me to relax, be lighter, to enjoy the ride

Anchor Baby and Into the Deep are about learning to surrender to the depths, really go into the deep … not to dwell in the dark, or the ‘bad‘ rather take time to get to know the quiet, more intimate or darker parts about yourself, life, a lover, without letting those darker parts weigh you down.

All the songs together help create that interconnected message that I am still in the process of attaining… balance in the most passionate way possible! Dive in deep, face fears, get to know every part or yourself and explore it, then emerge to sunny sparking surface with grace, levity, strength, a good sense of humor, true love and gratitude for this stellar adventure, life!

How do you write your songs? Do you have a particular method or process?
A lot of the time I will start with a lil melody , something really simple that just flows from my heart. Then the lyrics and chords feed into that to help create the song.

The best songs I written have been by trusting the process, allowing the songs reveal themselves to me rather than pushing to complete them or fit them into a specific style. That takes trust and that same surrender I just described in the Anchor Baby theme…let it flow without pushing so hard. That’s really difficult for me sometimes. I’m still learning.

Also, a band member once told me that songs are as unique as flowers, or people… some take time to find out who they are, others bloom up over night (thanks KB!).

Some of my songs seem to write themselves, as if I had nothing to do with the writing at all, like channeling the divine when you are open enough to listen. I was glad to know that ALL of my favorite songwriters have said the same thing in interviews. (note, songwriters: Read ‘Songwriters on Songwriting’) Closer was one of those that came out in one night, melody, chords, lyrics and all, and never really needed any editing.

Other songs like Red Balloon, Sailor, Love Alive, developed over time. Anchor Baby actually used to be a really simple old time sea shanty I wrote in high school called Anchor on Land… It naturally morphed into Anchor Baby and serves as a running theme through this record and is still influencing me on upcoming projects.

As far as a method… truthfully, I have never found 1 particular method that always works. The process changes as I change and I do my best to go with it. One thing that does remain: the melody , lyrics, and chords all relate and influence one another. The better get at playing the guitar, the easier it is to find chords that color the melody and lyrics and create a song where all the different parts are feeding into and influencing one another. That’s the best, feeling the interconnectedness of all of it.

Where there any artists in particular that influenced you during the writing or recording of the record? Neko Case Lykki Li, Patsy Cline, Feist, St Vincent, Ingrid Michaelson, Norah Jones, GaGa, Jim Morrison, Jeff Tweedy, Inara

George, Sia, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Dusty Springfield, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Nancy Sinatra… to name a few

For ‘Anchor Baby’ you collaborated with Grammy Award winning producer and engineer, Andy Kravitz. Did you enjoy working with him? What did he bring to the record?
AK! He was an amazing adventure to work with. Every song was a totally different process which kept both of us on our toes. Andy always met me where I was at which allowed me to really be myself in the studio. He was great at embracing me in whatever mood I was in and capturing it the perfect way.

A lot of the vocals were recorded in a tiny retro studio just steps from Venice

Beach, The Bordello. (Jim Morrison used to live there for a bit, love that part!) There were these amazing and perfectly cheesy waterfall mermaid lagoon murals all over the walls, a realllllly pretty Neumann mic and one of AK’s wonky old vintage drum kits, th - Smokin Charlie Brown

"Free Track Friday"

One listen to 'Closer' by Los Angeles-based songstress La Mer and it's not difficult to imagine her immersion into the beach culture of the Californian coast. The only thing that could give the track, lifted from her forthcoming EP 'Anchor Baby', any more of a beach vibe would be a subtle soundtrack of lapping waves to guide it. But La Mer's voice is subtle and soft, drawing comparisons with Colbie Caillat and possibly our own Lisa Mitchell to a certain extent. It's super-sweet and for a limited time, you can nab it for nix right HERE.

"A Soft World Of Love, Starfish & Addictive Love Songs"

La Mer is a singer, songwriter, and performer from Los Angeles who brings together theater, world travel, and music. Her new album, Anchor Baby – set to be released June 21 at an all night music and DJ party at the Witzend in Venice California – takes you into a melodic ecosphere of deep benthic reveries, happily adrift without a life preserver. Her unique voice can move from dreamy to definitive, shifting from a lazy sunfish to a playful, powerful dolphin. These are songs you put in your playlist to make daily life softer, happier and much, much more joyful.

Produced with the Emmy-winning Andy Kravits in Venice California after she returned to the Golden State from New York city, Anchor Baby is a dream album that immerses you in a soft world of love, star fish and addictive songs. Each of the cuts is at once personal and universal.

The title song, “Anchor Baby” pulls you under her oceanic spell immediately with soft sounds of surf introducing the refrain, “I’m married to the low tide”. The spell is completed with an accordion and old Gibson amps that give it a very warm sound, plus a simple and beautifully timed gong, almost like a ship’s bell, but more sweet. “Anchor Baby” is complex, but she and Andy Kravitz make it sound so simple that it is easy s to imagine her singing under bright clear water with her lush blonde hair floating out from her face and tiny fish circling in the notes.

“Closer”, done with a simple drum background and a tapestry of subtle instrumentation leaves you humming the line “come on closer to me, come closer baby”. The words are familiar, but the environment the song creates is unique.

“Into the Deep” beautifully showcases her luscious voice, soft and breathy but solid at the same time, tracking the notes perfecting, shifting from conversational to emotional, but always a joy to listen to.

My personal favorite is “Red Balloon” – a slow, steady melodic sea tale in which La Mer’s luminous vocals sail through a dreamscape of guitars, accordion, strings and tiny bells. It is a song that makes you stop what your are doing, close your eyes, and remember the last time you were at the beach and in love.

Each of the album’s seven songs is a jewel. Each began as a shimmering idea, nurtured in the collaboration between La Mer and Kravitz and then carefully, meticulously, artfully assembled into a unified, sea-worthy whole.

"LA Singer Songwriter La Mer Shines On Her Unique Debut Album "Anchor Baby""

Singer/Songstress La Mer brings her eclectic and emotional tracks to life on her petite debut album “Anchor Baby,” out today. Based out of Los Angeles, La Mer has taken every opportunity to spread her musical wings and experiment with different sounds. From her time spent on Broadway in New York City to the underground Art party scene in Brooklyn, to her touring days with the band The Mumbles, she’s allowed life to be her education in both songwriting and sound. After taking a break from performing and touring, La Mer took time out of the social scene for research, introspection and self discovery, shifting her focus to songwriting and recording. She recently returned home to LA, positioning her compass in the spring of the Venice renaissance. Settling in as Venice’s own gritty hula girl, La Mer has been making quite a splash with her little blue guitar and lulling melodies, attracting attention of local industry veterans and local venues. With the help of Grammy Award winning producer and engineer Andy Kravitz, La Mer has solidified the direction of “Anchor Baby” to make for a truly unique sound.

Her debut single “Closer” is a romantic, radio ready track that showcases her sweet vocals and knack for tapping into the emotional storytelling of truly great songwriting. With a voice that moves smoothly over the melody, she makes you believe in how deeply she wants this new love, falling freely into it without any hesitation. It’s a perfect summer track, chasing those winter blues away from the first note, full of hopefulness and endearing qualities that litter all of La Mer’s music. The title track, “Anchor Baby” is an ethereal and unique sound that allows her voice to flourish and become the focal point of the track. With a steady rumbling beat beneath her atmospheric vocals, backed up by standout lyrics like “my love is a flame, the deepest ocean, I want to show you my devotion,” it’s yet another song that paints her as a brilliant songwriter. There’s an underlying sense that she’s floating atop the water, her voice and words the anchor of the song, making for truly special musical experience. Staying true to her name (La Mer means the sea in French), the track “Sailor” is a stand-alone track with a strong, smooth leading melody, layers of call and response, and driving beat that carries it through to the climax. With such a stripped back feel it allows her lyrics to shine in a song about solitude, love lost , remaining humble, and not allowing your pride to get the best of you, despite everyone around you and how they may be living their life. “Into The Deep” is a subterranean love song, lacking the cliché of so many of the songs we hear on radio these days, calling out to the confusion that can come with loving someone but knowing that you should let go. The mix of the tremolo and bottleneck guitars layered under her vaporous lyrics create a sense of being underwater, allowing the lyrics and the instrumentation to relate in an effortless way. La Mer has a true talent for building songs that are cohesive, allowing the story to flow not only through the lyrics, but also through the music itself. In “Love Alive” she finds yet another unique way to describe what it’s like to fall in love. Returning to the sweet disposition in her vocals that work so perfectly with classic pop songs like this, she exposes her vulnerability while remaining timid and unsure, moving with ease over the fervid beat. The entire song is wrapped in sweetness, from the cellos gliding along with La Mer’s perfectly emotive vocals, to the piano adding that full bodied sound from this mostly stripped down EP; it’s another track that will lend itself to mainstream radio.

Throughout “Anchor Baby” La Mer exposes her talent for building beautiful, flowing stories that interweave with her instrumentation in such a lovely and surprising way, full of exciting vocal tracks and timeless lyrics. There’s nothing ordinary nor cliché in La Mer’s music, making her one of the few artists that willingly exposes her heart and soul to make music that speaks truthfully for her, the journey she’s been on, and to those who can relate.
