Loveskills’ debut EP “Multiplicity” is anything but unambitious.
As a one-man show, songwriter and producer Richard Spitzer dives into the synthesized abyss, climbing out with an eclectic mix of pop-driven melodies and hip-hop and dubstep inspired beats. “Multiplicity” draws on the ambient spacey sounds of the ’80s and carries with it the influences of hip-hop and R&B throughout.
The first track “Cover Me” is overtly 80s-esque, riding the synth-pop wave. But as you move through the album, you feel as if you’ve entered an electronica dream state. From the fourth track “Genorate,” and on, the album takes a hip-hop and R&B turn that solidifies this EP as an album worth listening to. - The Red and Black
Richard Spitzer, the beatsmith behind electronic outfit LOVESKILLS, is set to release his latest set of songs on February 14th via No Shame Records. The EP, called Multiplicity, mixes Spitzer’s love of electronic textures and fabricated beats to form an oddly compelling hybrid of synth-pop and hip hop, with more than a passing nod to some futurist dub-step as well. Filling out his cadre is Harlem raised rapper Alex Falk and drummer Steve Bryant. Together they find that happy balance between the artificial and the heartfelt, between the organic and synthetic. We have already heard from Spitzer about some of the influences for his work when he contributed to our On Deck feature and now you can hear the influences yourself.

In the state of multiplicity, we will find Loveskills. This one-man industry of music, Richard Spitzer, discovers himself through the craft of songwriting and producing textures of therapeutic synth, low frequency bass, and a balance of melodic heart speak. While new love kills the desire to surrender, ambitious heartbreak sets the stage. Loveskills comes in waves, different perspectives from the same vantage point in the heart of the city.
Ambient R&B and post-dubstep have been some of the terms people are using to describe the newsest project of this NYC-born producer. A musical visionary and creator of several EDM and indietronica acts in Brooklyn over the last few years, Spitzer has released music as Nite Club (CMJ top 20 Electronic), Vinyl Life, and Little Star Dweller with his release on Pictureplanes most recent remix album. With the live addition of thuggish eloquence from Harlem raised rapper Alex Falk and drummer Steve Bryant, Loveskills dances between sensuality and meticulous synth-scapes layered with shoegazed vocals that sound like angels dancing in your ears. If Drake and Tangerine Dream had a blissed out romantic escapade it would sound like this.
Born into an Orthodox Jewish / Cuban family, music was a natural part of daily life for young Spitzer, either at salsa parties or introspective prayer at the ultra-Orthodox Hebrew Temple. Diversity in music was Spitzers calling since he was little. Spitzer started performing at rave events at 16 years old. He blossomed as a keyboard player with prog-rock, punk and live drum n bass groups, using modern classical composition as his backdrop.
He then pursued a music education at SUNY where he was a composition classmate of Dan Deacon and Regina Spektor and once studied with Philip Glass. Ever since, hes been relentlessly honing his skills at production and has found time to perform across the US, Europe and Japan along side artists like The Rapture, The Roots, Jamie Lidell, Drop The Lime, Drake, Teengirl Fantasy, Brazilian Girls, and many more.
