How a simple phrase describes his changed life. Lucas James uses the grace of the Lord mixed with a unique blend of misfortune and lyrical talent to express how he wound up on the right path.
Lucas has been in the hip-hop world making records since 2000, but it wasn't until 2007 that Lucas had started rhyming for the Lord. Originally from Escanaba, MI (flip your right hand sideways, point to the bottom of you pinkly on that hand, that's Escanaba). Lucas made a name for himself as a MC by the age of 15 and by the age of 18, in 2003, he had 3 full length albums and had performed dozens of shows in several different states as a solo MC and with his hip-hop group Hokum. Lucas had caught the eye of a major independent record label in Detroit,MI and was offered a recording contract, later the deal was dropped due to management conflicts. Dealing with the disappointment of the failed dream, for the next three years, Lucas had hit rock bottom. It was time for a change, Lucas picked up everything and moved to Grand Rapids, MI in hopes of greener grass, but he did not find it. Lucas found himself in a tailspin of depression and anxiety.
Lost and down, but not out, Lucas started school in January of 2007. During that time he had met a key part of life, a girl named Rachel (Lucas' wife), who opened his eyes to a world he hadn't seen in nine years due to the haze of depression, drugs and filthy living. She had opened up his eyes to the Lord. In April of 2007, Lucas attended a church service on Easter Sunday with Rachel and her family, he would be forever changed.
The Lord took the next five months to work on him until September 1, 2007, Lucas excepted Christ as his savior. Changes were automatic. At the very moment the Holy Spirit entered his heart, Lucas was filled with the joy of a new song. Vowing to never enter the secular world with his music, Lucas started writing praises and real life reflections of a Spirit living with in him. The application of the Word and growth in the Lord is shown in the "Art of Breathing", an eclectic mix of hip-hop, rock, jazz and pop that is Lucas' first record. From beginning to end he tells a story of a man who has been through many ups and downs in life but was redirected to The Cross of Christ Jesus and made a new man.
