Biography

Lucas O’Connell is a New Zealand born singer-songwriter currently based in Brisbane, Australia. His music explores a diverse range of themes from society, religion, travel and time, to politics, dreams and relationships. Without any form of musical education, he taught himself to play guitar at the age of 21 purely by experimenting with sound. He primarily plays with a soft fingerpicking style, using various open tunings on both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars to create a unique eerie, sexy melodic sound.
Experimenting with various types of folk music by immersing himself in different cultures, he picks up on a wide range of techniques and ideas while roaming around the globe. His musical journey so far has taken him through Asia, Europe, Africa, and both North and South America. Lucas’ songs often refer to places that have influenced him, and some may say that his love for the road acts as the principal muse and source of inspiration for most of his original works. His music has often been compared to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake and Tim Buckley, all whom remain influences. He is also strongly influenced by the writings of Jack Kerouac.
Lucas has recently finished recording his first studio album ‘Songs to Sleep On’ with internationally recognized producer Dr. Lee Preble at The Surgery Studios in Wellington, New Zealand. It will be released in late 2012.
