Bio

What do you get when you combine two of Panama’s most respected musical exports with Toronto’s multicultural Latin community? Chances are you will get the dynamic sound and stylistic fusion that characterizes the music of Lucho De Sedas, Jay-D, y Los Selectos.

Since their arrival to Canada in 2001, Luis Rey “Lucho” De Sedas and his son Juan De Sedas have become mainstays in Toronto’s vibrant Latin music scene. Realizing that no single musical style could adequately capture the musical diversity that they experienced in their new surroundings, they set out to incorporate the best of what they heard. Today, their group features a broad cross section of musical talent and interests that are firmly rooted in the expressive culture of Latin America. Their music can best be described as a combination of Colombian and Panamanian popular rhythms with the dynamism of Puerto Rican salsa. The result is an exciting “Nueva Ola” and entertaining experience that will have the audience dancing in no time.

A national icon in his native country of Panama, Lucho has recorded over twenty albums for Tamayo, Sony Music and Universal Music Latino Records. His list of musical collaborations reads like a who’s who of Latin American music, including Alfredo Gutierrez, El Binomio de Oro De America, Johnny Ventura, Jorge Celedon, and Olga Tañon, among others.

Jay-D began playing accordion at the age of six and recorded his first album for Sony Music by the time he was eight (Mi Nombre es Juan Diego, 1996). As a performer, Jay-D has won numerous accordion competitions—including the prestigious title “Rey Infantil Tipico” at El Festival en Guararé—and has toured extensively throughout Central America.

Lucho De Sedas, Jay-D, y Los Selectos have performed for numerous events and festivals throughout Ontario and Quebec, including Canada Day at Downsview Park (2006), Hispanic Fiesta (2001-06), Salsa on Saint Clair (2005), Breakfast Television (2001) and Rythmes du Monde de Saguenay(2010). Their contribution to Canadian music in general and Latin music in particular has not gone unrecognized; their awards include “Best Male Artist” Top Choice Award (2006), “Best Band” Latin Industry Award (2005), and “International Legacy Award” Nuestro Orgullo(2005).

They have also worked on collaborations with various musicians among these are: Jesse Cook
