"Self Titled Release Review"

Before their album arrived in my inbox, I’d never heard of Calgary progressive quartet Lucid. Emerging from seemingly nowhere, their slow burning songs often take several minutes to flower as samples of rain and thunder are eventually – and leisurely – accompanied by echoing slight bass drum kicks or low strumming. As they grow and morph, multiple elements subtly meander in. Crooning vocals, throbbing bass lines, tribal percussion, cascading laser keys, winding desert rock guitar licks… these guys are clearly borrowing elements from renowned heroes like Pink Floyd (check out the ambitious cover of “Money” on their DVD), Tool and Porcupine Tree.

But, this is a softer side of the beast that is prog. Instead of overindulgent, it’s clear this band is still experimenting with the dynamics of sound and looking to do something new. The three-part “Eterna” is a particular highlight thanks to the tumbling walls of noise, though the vocals seemed oddly mismatched in the mix in part two of the song. At other times throughout the self-titled disc, the vocals are overpowered or at odds with the instrumentation. Despite that, they’re largely solid, particularly in the warm and stentorian styling of closing track, “Machine.” Overall, despite a few brief hiccups, Lucid is a quality debut from an unknown band that’s about to get a whole lot of recognition.
