Bio

Born from minor keys and a heavy dose of melody, Lucinda Black Bear (LBB) evokes the rapture and sorrow of a motherless cub. Their first album "capo my heart and other bear songs" frolics the musky musical landscape with palatable sonic morsels incorporating cellos, feedback, loops, pianos, drums, and oddly tuned acoustic/electric guitars. Songs like "Capo My Heart" and "Fought the Bear" with their plaintive, understated Elliott Smith meets Radiohead meets Chet Baker ruminations are attracted new music lovers the world over, including mad love from NPR to Prefixmag to Deli to Paste to having its music on A&E’s “The Beast. 2010 is gearing to be LBB’s biggest yet with Album #2 on its way, preceded by an EP and the band has already seen itself in Top 20 Alt Folk and NYC Top 200 artists in the Deli Magazine (Jan 2010).

LBB is led by Christian Gibbs (aka C.Gibbs) and fleshed out by Mike Cohen (Soft Explosions, Killer Elite) on bass, Kristin Mueller (Gloria Deluxe aka Cynthia Hawkins, Caulfield Sisters, Ports of Call- solo project) on drums and Chad Hammer on cello. Occasionally, you will find LBB augmented by Gillian on violin. While great as individuals, they form a massive force to be reckoned as the powerhouse ensemble LBB. Sometimes soft, sometimes hard, LBB may have many moods, but one can always count on craftsmanship in songs and performance.

The band was conceived when Gibbs had a batch of home-recorded songs that he felt needed some new blood and new instrumentation to augment his piano-guitar based, loop laden songs. First, Gibbs sought out a cellist he had heard great things about, a bleach blonde mohawked schoolteacher named Chad Hammer working at a non-profit social services/community center helping disadvantaged youth in NYC. The two scheduled a show at Pete’s Candy Store and got to work. Next was the meeting with Kristin Mueller (all decked out in denim) at a party in L.I.C. Learning she played drums, Gibbs asked her if she would be interested in lending her talents to the band and a “yes” was heard. Multi-instrumentalist and plaid shirt aficionado Mike Cohen was next on board with bass duties. The deal was done and it was the day folk met indie rock met roots.

Watch for new LBB music in 2010, along with more tour dates to come.
