"In A Honky Tonk Mood review"

GRITZ MAGAZINE – APRIL 2006
The Lucky Tomblin Band?In A Honky Tonk Mood?(Texas World Records)?Well, the sad news out of Nashville has been expounded on over and over again in recent years. Where the hell did real country music go?? The Nashvegas corporate types hijacked the genre sometime back, and I’ve been snooping around for some real honky tonk ever since. The good news is that time and time again the place to find some real country music is in the Lone Star State. From Billy Joe Shaver to the Flatlanders to Dale Watson to Asleep At The Wheel to Cory Morrow to Pat Green to Willie Nelson, Texas continues to produce great sounds and at the top of the list for me is the Lucky Tomblin Band.
Lucky Tomblin has been playing around Texas for a long time, went on to run the Fire Station recording studio in San Marcos, and then got back onstage in later years due to the urgings of his late friend Doug Sahm. A few years ago he put together the Lucky Tomblin Band and put out a self-titled album that was the blast of fresh air I was looking for. Now he and the gang have followed it up with “In A Honky Tonk Mood,” and it is exactly what the title implies, a rocking and shuffling album that would light up any beer joint worth’s its salt. And, the band he has put together is a lot of why the music rocks.
On guitar is one of the new Telecaster masters to come on the scene in the last decade or so in Redd Volkaert. Redd has played with everyone from Merle Haggard to Ray Price to Dale Watson. On piano is a man known as “Mr. Honky Tonk Piano,” Earl Poole Ball, who played with Johnny Cash for 20 years. He also played on the “Sweethearts of the Rodeo” album by the Byrds, played with the Flying Burrito Brothers, and a list of other musicians too long to name. On bass is the versatile Sarah Brown who has played with musicians ranging from Buddy Guy to Dr. John and all points in-between. Rounding out the band is Jon Hahn on drums, Bobby Arnold on rhythm guitar, and long time Texas guitar slinger John Reed.
This album is capable of turning any juke joint, basement, or backyard into an instant honky tonk. The CD starts out with the bluesy “I Done It,” and that leads into four shuffling, dance-invoking songs in a row with “The Key’s In The Mailbox,” “Trademark,” “Lonesome Hearted Blues,” and “I Don’t Believe I’ll Fall In Love Today.” After you have met you a gal and have thrown her around the dance floor a time or two, the Lucky Tomblin Band slows it down with a dance number to get to know her by in “Cold War.” As for the rest of the album, how can you go wrong with songs like “Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor,” “Loose Talk,” “I Got The Bull By The Horns,” and “Squaws Along The Yukon?” More information at –www.luckytomblinband.com.

"In a Honky Tonk Mood review"

CHARLESTON DAILY MAIL – MARCH 2, 2006

The Lucky Tomblin Band In a Honky-Tonk Mood (Texas World Records). Old school honky-tonk doesn't get much better than this. Veteran Texas swing vocalist Lucky Tomblin has tapped some of Austin's finest - and more importantly, like-minded - musicians to back him on a collection of little known gems. The set kicks off with Moon Mullican's "I Done it" which showcases Tomblin's expressive baritone as well as pianist Earle Poole (who played on the Byrds' classic "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" LP) and Telecaster monster Redd Volkaert. Standouts among the 15 tracks are a version of Porter Wagoner's "Trademark," Floyd Tillman's smooth, country-jazz "Cold War" (which employs period terms like "iron curtain" to describe an especially chilly relationship) and the novelty love song "Squaws Along The Yukon" with a wonderfully wacky chorus: "oogaloog am ooshkaw means that 'I love you... if you'll be my baby I'll oogaloog am ooshkaw you"). While there's the expected cry-in-your-beer tunes like the remorseful "There She Goes" and "I Love You So Much it Hurts," there's also plenty of uptempo, two-steppin' tracks like "Thanks A lot" (with nifty twin leads), the rockin' "I Got the Bull By the Horns" and the timeless "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor." "No Depression review"

May/June issue of No Depression

"(Lucky) and his all-star band don't just dust off obscure Texas classics,
they revive them, filling them with fresh energy and paying homage to key
figures in the genre such as Floyd Tillman, Johnny Horton and Moon Mullican
... this set of deep-cut covers unfolds like an enjoyable honky-tonk history
lesson."

Bio

Each of the band's members has an impressive resume of recording experience. While Lucky Tomblin first sang in public with the likes of Roger Miller, Little Jimmy Dickens and Ray Price, it was as a founder of the Fire Station Studio that he became best known, working with such artists as the Texas Tornados, Joe Ely, Flaco Jimenez and many others. At the urging of his good friend, the late Doug Sahm, Lucky got back to performing again, which led to the formation of The Lucky Tomblin Band.

Earl Poole Ball spent 20 years as a member of Johnny Cash's band, and also played piano on two landmark albums: Gram Parson's Safe At Home and The Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. During his stellar career, he's also recorded with Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Freddie Hart, Wynn Stewart, Rick Nelson, Marty Robbins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Marty Stuart, among others.

Redd Volkaert most-recently was lead guitarist for Merle Haggard's band, The Strangers. He's also recorded several solo albums of his own and played on numerous albums, including one by Brad Paisley, Mud On The Tires, which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Bassist Sarah Brown has toured or recorded with such artists as Albert Collins, Earl King, Jimmy Rogers, Sunnyland Slim, James Cotton, Snooks Eaglin, Dave Alvin, Paul Carrack and Billy Bragg.

Drummer Jon Hahn has performed with the likes of The Flatlanders, Radney Foster, Joe Ely, and Rosie Flores.

Rhythm guitarist Bobby Arnold, who also engineered the new CD, has recorded such legends as Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Merle Haggard and Les Paul.

The most recent addition to the lineup is guitarist John Reed, who joined shortly after the band recorded the first album. John's credits include work with Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Doug Sahm, Marcia Ball and Lucinda Williams.

Texas World Records, distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution, has announced a February 14, 2006 release date for In A Honky-Tonk Mood, the new CD from The Lucky Tomblin Band, which includes an all-star lineup of some of Austin's finest musicians.

"The original concept for In A Honky-Tonk Mood was to find great, obscure country songs from the '40s, '50s (and maybe a few from the '60s) that had fallen through the cracks of time and never been revived," says Lucky Tomblin. "We went through thousands of old songs and culled them down to approximately 15. We ended up with a mix of obscure and old favorites - the newest is at least 40 years old, and many of them much older than that."
