"Exclusive Premiere: Luke Underhill Triumphs with 'Long Way Home'"

By Laura B. Whitmore
April 8, 2019

Chicago native Luke Underhill brings us along for one amazing ride on “Long Way Home.” Rolling piano erupting into full-on energy and inspiring lyrics expertly delivered by Underhill make this song a must listen. A spirited and triumphant song! Wow! “Long Way Home” appears on his new EP, Illuminations, which releases on April 12.

Underhill shares, “It’s hard writing about yourself and your personal life. And that’s what this song is, my life. I wanted to write about how much fun life was as a kid, and how to get that passion back as I am now. Taking things slow, and enjoying the little moments that later become memories."

Combining his mystically old soul and unique take at songwriting, Underhill is gearing up to release his sophomore studio EP, titled Illuminations, with hit producer Warren Huart (The Fray, Marc Broussard, Korn, Aerosmith, Better Than Ezra) at the helm. The forthcoming, 5-song EP embodies Underhill’s vision for his music and portrays how much the versatile artist has come into his own in the past year.

“When I first heard Luke Underhill’s voice and read his lyrics I knew I had to work with him,” said producer Warren Huart. “Luke is the artist I’ve been waiting for ever since I first heard The Fray’s demo of “Cable Car” sitting in a Studio Car Park in a Ford F150 Truck. Luke reminds me of everything we want in an Artist. I’m so excited for people to hear his music.” - Parade.com

"Artist Spotlight Yet Again By Luke Underhill Premiere"

By "MADD" Manda Walsh
April 9, 2019

There are certain voices in music that when you hear them, you instantly feel how powerful they are and what they’re capable of. It’s not just their vocal performance that’s captivating, though. There’s a certain magic in their lyrics as well that immediately resonates with you and touches your heart. That’s how producer Warren Huart (The Fray, Marc Broussard, Koran, Aerosmith, Better Than Ezra) felt the first time he heard Luke Underhill’s voice, and why he knew he had to work the Chicago native on his sophomore release. As the 23-year-old prepares to release his second EP entitled Illuminations, TBK has an exclusive premiere of its leading single before its scheduled release date of Friday, April 12th.

One listen to “Yet Again” and it’s easy to hear how Underhill’s influences range from Gavin DeGraw and Bruce Springsteen to Ed Sheeran and Ben Folds. In particular, the piano driven ballad highlights not only the singer-songwriter’s impressive vocal skills, but also showcases his remarkable story-telling abilities as well. From the very first note, Underhill pulls us in, taking us on this mystical journey blurring the lines of spiritualism and romanticism, and leaves us in a whirlwind of emotions.

If “Yet Again” is just a sneak peak of what we can expect from Underhill’s forthcoming release, then there’s no doubt that this talented independent artist has an exciting career to look forward to. - TBK Magazine By "MADD" Manda Walsh on April 9, 2019

"Amnplify Interview with Luke Underhill"

Chicago-based alt-pop singer/songwriter, Luke Underhill is what would happen if John Mayer and Ben Folds met in a bar – Underhill’s vocals instantly memorable with that replay button never far away on any of his tracks.
Already an established self-released back catalogue, including Atlas and Atlas Unplugged along with the single Too Good for Me, last August Underhill released a new EP and the first on Revolver Recordings entitled The Left Side featuring the lead single in I’ll Be Waiting and the ever-so-infectious Wish.
Luke Underhill recently had a chat with AMNplify about all things music. Check it out below!

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

It was a passion that grew over time. I always admired Bruce Springsteen and the way he controls the crowd, but I think it was seeing the AC/DC Live from Donington DVD. Watching the crowd go nuts for Angus Young, when he first appears on stage, is what really got me hooked. I wanted to experience that feeling too.
.
How would you best describe your sound?

I never know how to answer this question because I don’t have a real answer. The quick answer is just rock pop or alternative pop. I’ve been told I have a sound composed of several styles: rock, pop, soul, punk and classic. I just try to make the best music I can when I write.

Who are your main musical influences?

I have a lot! Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, HAIM, Ed Sheeran and Ben Folds. Ben Folds will always be my biggest influence. He has the biggest impact on my performing style and my all around personality on stage. If only I had his chops on piano!

What is the inspiration behind Wish?

Wish came from a feeling I’ve never really had myself. It was a tough song to write lyrically. I was spending time with a couple friends of mine who have been dating for quite awhile. The love they have for each other is really cool to see. We were all talking and he said something along the lines of “I could not have wished for a more perfect person to spend my life with”. That is the essence of the song. Wishing for love, a big house, a garden full of roses… but it’s the person you want to share all of that with that you’re really wishing for.

What are the themes explored on The Left Side EP?

I’m not sure if there is one specific theme. I just tried to write a couple of good tunes that would connect with my listeners and my fans. So, what I did for a couple songs is watch some classic rom-coms and get inspiration from the stories these characters were acting out.
.
How does The Left Side differ to what you’ve released in the past?

The biggest difference is the production behind the album. I always self-produced my old stuff and never really had a team behind me. So many amazing and talented people worked on this album that I almost feel like I didn’t do enough. Mikal Blue and everyone at Revolver Studios made my songs into everything I thought they could be and more.

What inspires your song writing?

Everything. Inspiration is everywhere. It just depends on what I am feeling and what I want to say. I try not to write from very personal places. If I do, I try and look at it from someone else’s point of view and write it like a storybook rather than a diary. I think the more I write and the more I grow as an artist, the more personal I will become in my songs.

What has been your most memorable career highlight to date?

I’ve done some cool things. I headlined the House of Blues in Chicago when I was 18, I also got to play live on WGN (a virtual news channel based in Chicago) with over 2.5 million households watching and I even get recognised at bars and the airport which is super cool. The best experience I’ve had though; is flying out to Los Angeles and recording this last album under Mikal Blue. It was a dream come true. I was playing in the big leagues! Artists that I grew up on and look up to would just appear out of nowhere and talk to me about what I was working on. It was a trip I’ll never forget.

What is something you would like to achieve career-wise that you haven’t done yet?

All I’ve ever wanted from my career is success. I don’t need a Grammy, I don’t need to be on magazine covers and I don’t need to live in a mansion on a hill. All I want is to be able to support myself and my family. I don’t need to be recognised at every street corner I stand at, but if one person reaches out and tells me that my music made a difference in their life, that’s all I need. I want to help and make a difference.

If you could play any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

The Hollywood Bowl has always been and will always be my ultimate goal. To be able to play a historic venue like that would be a surreal experience. Other places like Madison Square Garden and the Glastonbury Festival would be incredible, but The Bowl is what I want. If I am ever lucky enough to play there, it will be the best show I am capable of putting on. Guest appearances and all!

"Premiere: The Timelessness of Luke Underhill’s Acoustic “I Wanna Make You Dance”"

Years go by and songwriters come and go, but emotions are universal; love hasn’t changed. Raw, emotionally-fueled music stands the test of time, evoking the same feelings it did ten, twenty, thirty years before. Tender and heartfelt, Luke Underhill’s “I Wanna Make You Dance” is a timeless testament to love and passion, echoing that late-night, last-ditch effort to lay it all out there for someone special.
The party is over
No one is around
I’ll pull you closer
Don’t make a sound
We don’t have forever
But we have right now
I Wanna Make You Dance
“I Wanna Make You Dance” – Luke Underhill

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the acoustic video for “I Wanna Make You Dance,” off Luke Underhill’s recently-released EP, The Left Side (August 18, 2017 via Revolver Recordings). The 21-year-old singer/songwriter worked on his first indie label effort with Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz), citing a range of influences spanning Gavin DeGraw and Bruce Springsteen, Ed Sheeran and Ben Folds. Though these artists are certainly evident in the finer print of Underhill’s work, there’s still something very much unique about his Chicago-based style: A little bit country mixes into the rock and pop stylings of a budding artistry that is at once relatable and different.

While his studio version is a fast-paced number made to move feet, the “I Wanna Make You Dance” acoustic rendition is a slightly slower, still driving piano song that relies on Underhill’s dynamic performance for ultimate success.
The Left Side - Luke Underhill

The Left Side – Luke Underhill
Some men have the world
And their blind to everything
All I want is my hands on your hips, for a moment
To sweep you off your feet
Nothing lasts forever
So lets make this count
I wanna make you dance

“Acoustically, this song is very challenging because my piano is only a small part of the song, and I have to bring the same intensity as I would with my band behind me. It’s a challenge, but that won’t keep me from giving it my all,” the artist shared. The piano-only accompaniment lends results in Underhill plunging even deeper into his skills as a performer: He must own every part of the song, and he delivers with flying colors.

“This song is probably the most fun song I have written so far. I think that’s why it was harder to write; I didn’t want the focus to be on the lyric, I wanted the music to be the focus. When I play the song live, so much emotion comes through in myself and the audience. It is the perfect song to end a show with.”

Fast or slow, “I Wanna Make You Dance” is a magnificent composition that is sure to move us both inside and out. Its sentiment is time-tested and listener-approved, a warm and meaningful extension of palpable feeling that echoes long after last call: Nothing lasts forever, so let’s make this count. I wanna make you dance. - ATWOOD MAGAZINE By Mitch Mosk

"Unwrapped… Luke Underhill’s ‘Wish’"

Rising talent Luke Underhill released the beautiful ‘Wish’ a month ago. We spoke to the singer-songwriter about the track, its inspiration and what to expect next.

‘Wish’ is a fantastic track, what artists were you listening to at the time you wrote it?

I have listened to the same group of artists I have always listened to. Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, Bruce Springsteen, etc… but at the time I wrote this song, Ed Sheeran’s album ‘Divide’ was just released. I’ve always been a big fan of him so that album was playing on repeat through my apartment for a good week. I took a lot of inspiration from his writing style for ‘Wish’.

What was the initial spark of inspiration for writing the song?

It’s really hard to go out of your way to find inspiration. To me, that’s not how inspiration works. It just happens. I was sitting with a buddy of mine and his girlfriend, and we were just talking about anything and everything. The chemistry between them is as good as it gets. Their love for each other is beautiful. I wrote ‘Wish’ about them and their love.

What was the experience of writing The Left Side like?

It got to be very stressful. I knew I was trying to write for a new project, but I didn’t know what I wanted. All I knew was that it had to be different, and by different, I meant upbeat and fun. So that change of writing style for me was a challenge. Wish was a song I wrote after I thought the writing for the project was done. The song fit even though it was an emotional love song. I also had great producers (Mikal Blue and Michael Clouse) that nailed the feel I was looking for in my songs.

How do you approach the storytelling aspect of your songs?

I used to write my songs from a very honest and very personal place. But for this last album I wanted to change things up a bit and write songs based more on stories and related events rather than personal experiences. I want to tell stories with these songs, and I feel like I did a good job at that.

What can we expect from you next?

I’m currently writing for the next project, and it is going to have a different feel to it. Not totally different, but I’m still a new artist, I’m still finding my sound. As I mature as an artist, so will my art. There will be an official video coming out for one of the tracks from “The Left Side”. I do have all of the songs on the album recorded acoustic with videos, so maybe an unplugged version of the album is in the future, to give the songs a different feel. There are also a few songs that didn’t make the cut for “The Left Side” that I plan on using in later projects. I also found out that I have a pretty big following in the Hispanic community, so I plan on releasing a Spanish version of one of my songs soon. Since I am yet to touch on my Hispanic background, it will be a cool and fun thing to do. - Tobias Pugh

"Emerging Pop Artist Luke Underhill Releases Debut Major Studio Project 'The Left Side'"

Emerging Pop singer/songwriter and Chicago native Luke Underhill is celebrating the release of his debut major studio project, The Left Side. The 7-track project, with hit producer Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz, One Republic) at the helm, was recorded at Revolver Recordings in Los Angeles, CA earlier this year. The multi-talented 21-year old co-wrote two of the tracks on the new project and penned the other five songs solo. In celebration of the release, Underhill performed today on Chicago's WGN Morning News.

Variety Beat exclusively premiered the audio HERE.

The Left Side is available now on iTunes.

Underhill explains: "Working on this album was unlike any other. This album was nothing less than an experience. As I was writing for this album, I knew from the beginning that it would be different than anything else I've done so far. I had big plans from the start. A different sound, a different feel, a different point of view in every way. None of it could have been achieved without the magic that is Mikal Blue and everyone at Revolver Studios. From my first day arriving at that studio, it immediately felt like home. Mikal Blue captured my sound and the feel I wanted just by getting to know who I was as a person, and who I was influenced by."

Producer Mikal Blue says: "Luke's ability to tell a story with an infectious melody make his songs stand out. His voice pulls you in and his catchy piano melodies and guitar hooks seal the deal."

With diverse influences ranging from Gavin DeGraw and Bruce Springsteen to Ed Sheeran and Ben Folds, Luke Underhill is preparing to make his mark in the format. The Chicago area singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarists' emotional renditions of his songs have already earned him comparisons to a young John Mayer - while some more upbeat arrangements inspire exciting flashes of early Bryan Adams.

Underhill will wrap up release day with a full band show at The Law Office Pub & Music Hall in Yorkville, IL. The show kicks off at 9pm CT and admission is free. - BWW Music World

Exclusive: Listen to Luke Underhill’s EP ‘The Left Side’ Before It’s Release!
August 17, 2017 Variety Beat

Pop Music is noticeably lacking in true depth from singer/songwriters in today’s music industry. Ed Sheeran blasted onto the scene with a little help from Taylor Swift to pave the way for him here in the USA when she took him on The Red Tour. He has become one of the biggest artists of today, selling massive records and he can play to stadiums with a single guitar and heartfelt lyrics. While he might seem like a phenomenon, there are other gems, just like him, waiting to be found.

Enter Luke Underhill, the 21-year-old Chicago Based singer/songwriter has a sound and a vision that’s unlike the other music in the Pop industry right now. His EP The Left Side allows listeners to dance to the music, while also receiving lyrics that mean something. They aren’t words that just sound fun, or little one liner phrases tied together set to a hip beat. The industry is changing and it needs artists like Underhill to give back quality music. Music that not only lets you feel good but taps into emotions. We need more strong male artists to be the voice of today’s generation.

Luke Underhill shared the excitement about his EP The Left Side with Variety Beat:

"Working on this album was unlike any other. I’ve done projects in the past, but that’s all they ever were; projects. This album was nothing less than an experience. As I was writing for this album, I knew from the beginning that it would be different than anything else I’ve done so far. I had big plans from the start. A different sound, a different feel, a different point of view in every way. None of it could have been achieved without the magic that is Mikal Blue and everyone at Revolver Studios. From my first day arriving at that studio, it immediately felt like home. Mikal Blue captured my sound and the feel I wanted just by getting to know who I was as a person, and who I was influenced by. He’s absolutely outstanding at what he does, and I’ve never been so comfortable with anyone as I was with Mikal and the Revolver team". - Variety Beat

So much of pop music is auto-tuned, polished, shaved down until all the rough-hewn, distinctive elements are faded and gone. It’s tragic, really. But up and comer Luke Underhill frames his gravelly voice, unapologetically, with his first single “I’ll Be Waiting,” an amalgamation of Bryan Adams, John Mayer and Gavin DeGraw. It is unmistakably him, too, slyly gliding across throwback soft-rock, which deals in hearty singer-songwriter lyricism and anthemic-style production. In a brand new live performance video, premiering today, Underhill looks the crowd in the face and pours his heart out. The yearning of the lyrics to the tenderness of his phrasing, particularly on the verses, sets the tone for the intense and raw hook, hitting you squarely across the eyes. “I try and I try,” he wails, backed by brisk guitar lines and thudding percussion.

“Baby, I’d show you what you’re worth,” he later avows, as the arrangement heaves and sighs around him. “If you love me, let me know. I’ll be waiting right here,” he then proposes. The gathered audience soaks in the fervent and somehow solemn tone of the song, both gleeful and fierce.

“Performing as a solo artists and performing with a band are two completely different things. This was my first show with my band in about three years and I couldn’t be more happy with how the band played and how much fun we all had,” Underhill tells B-Sides & Badlands about the moment he stepped out onto that stage. “It was an awesome feeling to showcase my new music from my upcoming project and I am looking forward to playing more shows with these talented guys.”

Hailing from Chicago, Underhill is expected to drop his first project, The Left Side EP, Aug. 18.

"Luke Underhill "Atlas Unplugged" Music Review"

In a relatively short period of time, Chicago suburban singer/songwriter Luke Underhill released his debut collection of material, Atlas and an immediate acoustic set featuring songs from the first set, dubbed Atlas Unplugged. The story behind the young man and his passion for music is simple enough; life and love and the labors of both that spill over into his music. What catches the ear about this acoustic set isn't so much the position but the compositions, a remarkably keen ear for guitar and piano arrangements coupled with a voice that is as soulful as it is honest.

In rare form, Luke conveys the varied passions of love with a guitar, a piano (usually one or the other) and his words on tracks like the dimly lit and well spaced "Stars", the Decemberists-esque lyrical quality of "The Working Man's Daughter" and the confusion-turned-clarity compliments of "Something", which sounds so perfected that it demands a wide (as in radio) audience. The opposite side of this subject takes form in the churning emotive "No More Like Me", where Luke attempts to convince a lost love that nobody will quite go the lengths he would for her. This is fairly universal material, simply projected in a way that conveys emotion and impact as good as and on ocassion better than many of the more popular artists of Underhill's ilk. Nothing quite compares to the booming chorus of "Atlas", however, where Luke channels the power of a Bryan Adams in his voice with a patient piano melody backdropping his incredible pipes.

Atlas Unplugged doesn't just supplement the original Atlas; in my humble opinion, it brings the heart and soul of the latter directly into the listener's sights. You can almost touch the energy, and so alive is the love Luke Underhill has for his craft that even those like me who wouldn't necessarily dabble in this sound as a first choice cannot help but be swept up in the sheer honesty of it all,

Luke Underhill – ‘Atlas Unplugged’

By Skope

Luke Underhill’s Atlas Unplugged is straight from the heart. From the careful arrangements to the resonant sound, everything simply works. Vocals are the highlight of the album. Raw and earnest the lyrics are clever narratives, dedications to cherished ones, love songs done right. Together the pieces work to create an album of great warmth. By stripping these songs down to their absolute essentials they are able to have a far greater impact.

Audio: https://soundcloud.com/luke-underhill/sets/atlas-unplugged

With elegant piano work is the hopeful work of “Stars” opening up the album on a high note. Impassioned guitar strums punctuate the sweetness of “The Working Man’s Daughter”. Luke Underhill’s careful word choice accentuates the struggle between himself and a father. Dreamier in tone is the gentle atmospheres of “No More Like Me”. Quite lovely in execution the piece drifts up airy in tone with a sense of sadness that permeates the piece. Down to an absolute whisper is “Atlas” by far the highlight of the album. Carefully setting the mood the song moves with precision. Introspective the song makes good use out of the piano’s decaying sounds, letting the space of the help to fully emphasize the mood. Taking a more upbeat tone is the jaunty work of “Something”. Bringing the album to a satisfying conclusion is the expansive work of “To Love And Let Go”.

Atlas Unplugged does love songs just right. Keeping things simple Luke Underhill is able to show exactly how love songs should sound.

"Luke Underhill "Atlas Unplugged" Music Review"

AUTHOR Melissa Kucirek DATE September 23, 2015

19. He’s only 19.
With skills and confidence well beyond his 19 years on this earth, Chicago’s Luke Underhill possesses a tight grip on stellar songwriting skills and beautiful orchestrations in the stirring ‘Atlas Unplugged’ collection.
Calling to mind other singer/songwriters like Howie Day or even John Mayer, Underhill’s romantic prose and heart-on-sleeve approach is perfect for pop rock fans. I suspect the younger female tweens and such will go goo-goo-radio-gaga for this sensitive soul. But, don’t count out his appeal to younger males that find themselves reaching for better ways to communicate with the opposite sex.
“Stars” is subtle and quite intoxicating. While all the songs on ‘Atlas’ are acoustic, the piano orchestrations and acoustic guitar combinations in most (including “Stars”) can at times be a bit of a beautiful distraction to Underhill’s surprisingly robust vocals.
The track “Working Man’s Daughter” will not get out of my head. When I first started listening to this song, I was a bit bored by the long introduction. Get the point! Don’t bore us, get to the chorus! Something changed and all of a sudden, his heart poured itself into the words and his acoustic guitar playing bordered on an angry and passionate display. What a powerful song!
“No More Like Me,” “Atlas” “Something” and “Heart of Glass” collectively cement Underhill’s distinct song-writing prowess. He’s reflective. He keeps the listener in check with their thoughts, at the same time, slowly taking their arm down an emotional path. He’s also 19.
With eight tracks total and all acoustic, the mellow tones and sometimes heart-breaking feelings spread out over melodies and cascading keys, Underhill puts together an exceptional package.

"Luke Underhill "19 yr old Emerging Artist""

EMERGING CHICAGO AREA
SINGER/SONGWRITER LUKE UNDERHILL
CREATES A POWERFUL DUALITY, FOLLOWING
THE ROCK ENERGY OF HIS EP ‘ATLAS’ WITH
RAW, INTIMATE VERSIONS ON ‘ATLAS UNPLUGGED’

For most pop/rockers making their early splashes on the indie music scene, having a veteran producer who has worked with everyone from Elton John and Led Zeppelin to George Harrison and Bad Company would be the main thrust of an introductory story. That would be fine if conventional stardom was the goal, but multi-talented 19-year-old singer/songwriter Luke Underhill is passionate about taking his growing legion of fans deeper into the heart of his artistry - to the organic place where each song began.

In a bold move that offers insight his unconventional approach to recording and performing, he has put out two related projects. A week after releasing his Epps-produced power-pop EP Atlas, Underhill dropped Atlas Unplugged, an all acoustic set featuring stripped down versions of some tunes from Atlas among its eight tracks. Alternating his lead instrumental voice from guitar to piano, he has recently incorporated mandolin, ukulele and looping pedals into his acoustic performances. Working with his full band The Voyage, he’s also rocked festivals and venues in the area around his native Chicago, including EvenFlow in Geneva, Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn and the House of Blues.

With influences ranging from AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen to Ed Sheeran, Underhill’s emotional acoustic renditions of his songs have earned him comparisons to a young John Mayer – while the rock driven arrangements inspire exciting flashes of early Bryan Adams. “For me, the unplugged versions are ways for people to know how I was feeling when I wrote the songs, even on those songs where I’m playing guitar but wrote the original riffs and chords on piano,” he says. “It’s important for my fans to get a sense of how I originally created these, and I think I’m more passionate about my music when I’m playing it with just an acoustic guitar and my voice. In other words, the idea behind creating Atlas Unplugged was to record these tunes as I originally intended for them to sound. I think all of my music reflects who I am, since they are all sharing my feelings at any given time. For some reason, I feel like the unplugged versions are more intimate and emotional than my full band recordings. What you hear on these is essentially what you would be hearing if you were listening from outside my bedroom door.”

An incredibly soulful and insightful songwriter, Underhill penned “Get Through The Night,” his first tune ever, at age 14 upon the passing of a favorite uncle. His current songs reflect his desire to tap into personal stories (and those of others close to him) to help people who listen feel less alone and get through difficult times in their lives. One of the songs that is gaining great traction and attention is the beautiful and infectious “Something,” which he wrote to express certain feelings about his then-girlfriend that he had a hard time verbalizing. Epps believes that the haunting ballad “Heart of Glass” – which Underhill wrote at 15, inspired by the romantic lament of a female friend upon a breakup – has the potential to be a major hit. Another of the artist’s favorites is “No More Like Me,” written about doing all he could for a girlfriend who he thinks may later regret parting ways with him.

Underhill is currently working on a new recording called Hyphen, dedicated to the life of a childhood friend who passed away unexpectedly while in his late teens. “The hyphen,” he says, “refers to the dash in the middle of the dates on his tombstone. It represents everything he did from the moment he was brought into this world, to the second he left. It hit home pretty hard. The songs are about the lessons learned I have learned so far in my short time on this earth. Likewise, the idea behind ‘Atlas’ is that sometimes we need help and guidance in making decisions about how to live our lives. Just like when you’re traveling to a destination by car, sometimes you need to refer to an atlas to help you get to your destination.” - Jonathan Widran

Center Stage - Luke Underhill

Get to know our latest awesomely talented Center Stage artist, Luke Underhill

A young rising star in the Chicago area, Luke has already gained national attention with his music. He is a 19 yr old singer/songwriter who plays multiple instruments and continues to turn heads when he performs with his band or as a solo artist.

Adopted at birth, Luke also has an adopted sister 2 months and 3 days younger. Luke proudly displays a Roman numeral tattoo on his upper forearm that reads 10.16.95, the day his adoptive parents brought him home from the hospital, which he describes it as “the day my parents saved my life".

Describe your sound in one ramble-on sentence.
There is nothing super crazy about my sound. It is basically simple, fun, and melodious-Whether it is for relaxing at home or dancing in your bedroom!

What inspires you to make music?
I have had some personal rough patches, as everyone has, so I write and perform music to make my personal troubles a beautiful learning lesson for my fans, because they could be going through something similar.

What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
The fact that just with a simple four chords and a catchy melody, I have the opportunity to change someones life forever, as well as my own.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a musician?
A big challenge is being extroverted. I like to keep to myself, and don’t like to socialize with other people due to feeling extremely judged by anyone I happen to talk to. Also, letting the world know however I’m feeling through my lyrics. While it can be very touching, it is anxiety-inducing because others around the world that I have no clue exist, know me on a somewhat personal level. It’s pretty freaky to think about.

Name three people who have influenced your music, and tell us why- Living or dead.
Growing up with my dad behind the wheel, the only music to blast out of his speakers was the one and only Bruce Springsteen. Such a powerful presence.
Paul McCartney always spoke to me on a personal level. His sweet and soft voice, while being able to really make it wild and raspy is something I like to think I do a good job at with my own music.
Also, Ed Sheeran was a recent artist who really impacted me as a musician. A funny looking awkward kid with tattoos and messy hair, that has the voice of absolute gold. I admired that, being an awkward funny looking teenager myself.

Do you have any recent or upcoming projects you'd like to share with us? Tell us about it.
I have an album in the works called “Hyphen". The idea came to me at a sad time. I was attending a funeral of an old friend, whom I called my little brother. After we were leaving the grave site, his father shows me the place holder headstone, in place for the real one that is in the works. I see, “1996-2013” and I think… That hyphen represents everything he did from the moment he was brought into this world, to the second he left. It hit home pretty hard. The album is a dedication to him and his life, with the songs being lessons learned in my short time so far on this earth.

What is your ideal or target audience?
Anyone who can relate to my music! I believe my music is made for the ears of all ages. It is fun, while also being relaxing to listen too.

Do you write/compose your own songs? Briefly describe your songwriting process..
I do write my own music. It all starts with a simple idea, feeling, or experience that I want to write about. Then, I compose the instrumental part of my music to fit the feel of whatever I’m trying to represent. The lyrics just flow naturally. You can’t force feelings, feelings just happen. - Radio Airplay Blog

"Luke Underhill Releases New Album 'Atlas Unplugged'"

The singer and songwriter known as Luke Underhill has released his second album of 2015, “Atlas Unplugged.” The acoustic record is a 40-min. record much anticipated by his loyal and growing fan base, preceded by his 2013 debut EP “Back to November” and the recently released and highly acclaimed “Atlas” EP. All three have been proudly published on the Rags Records independent music label. Soulful, earnest and remarkably well-written, “Atlas Unplugged” is the latest reason for music aficionados to pay close attention to this young performer from the Chicago area.

Luke Underhill has cited the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer as main artistic influences, each of which has added an element to Underhill's signature style. This style is marked by songwriting of the highest caliber in the pop-music tradition, particularly showcased in the pared-down recordings and cleanly unadorned performances captured on this new “Atlas Unplugged” release.

“I wanted to keep the acoustic versions real simple and pure,” the artist himself writes of this, “just me and my instrument with a few subtle accents here and there.”

With one exception, Underhill's new “Atlas Unplugged” contains an acoustic version of every track on his “Atlas” EP. “Atlas Unplugged” also comes packaged with three acoustic tracks not featured on his plugged-in record, though fans new and old will attest that both albums are needed for a roundly comprehensive experience of the Luke Underhill sound.

Asked to describe his themes on the “Atlas” and “Atlas Unplugged” albums, Underhill has said, “There are many ways to live your life and you can find answers in many different ways and places. Sometimes you need help, direction and guidance. Just like when you're traveling to a destination, sometimes you need to refer to an 'Atlas' for directions and guidance to help get you there.”

Also very much of note with regard to Underhill's sudden rise is the announcement that he plans to release yet another record, currently titled “Hyphen,” in spring of 2016. It is rumored the album, the length of which has not been publicly proclaimed, will be entirely composed of new Luke Underhill material.

In terms of similarities, his own style lies closest to the latter two, and fans of both Mraz and Mayer are certain to be enthusiastic with all of Luke Underhill's repertoire and especially with this latest “Atlas” EP.

Speaking of the themes of his “Atlas” record, Underhill writes, “There are many ways to live your life and you can find answers in many different ways and places. Luke Underhill is an up-and-coming young musician from the Chicago area. His “Atlas” EP is the first of two extended-play albums scheduled to drop from him in May 2015, the second being an unplugged version of “Atlas” with a release date of the 19th. “Atlas Unplugged” will feature all of the tracks on “Atlas” EP except one, but contain two more songs in total.

Speaking of his start in music, Underhill writes, “I started watching concert videos when I was nine years old and my parents started taking me to Springsteen concerts as they are big 'Bruce' fans. I remember thinking how cool it would be cool to do that. I starting taking guitar lessons, then wrote my first song at 14. Then songs starting flowing as my way of expressing my emotions, frustrations and feelings growing up. I started exploring every genre of music and it has become big part of my life and always will be regardless of where my music career takes me.”

"Luke Underhill Interview"

Where Are They Now: Luke Underhill, musician

By Igor Studenkov For Sun-Times Media July 3, 2014 5:26PM

Updated: July 7, 2014 2:18AM

Yorkville musician Luke Underhill is only 18 years old. He just graduated Yorkville High School this year, but he already has plenty to be proud of.

On July 6, he is headlining a show at Chicago’s iconic House of Blues. His music is getting airplay in Los Angeles. And, having released his first album last year, he hopes to release his second album in the next few months.

Underhill described his musical style as a mix of pop and rock influences. He sees the music as a way to express his feelings better than he might be able to express them in words. And while Underhill isn’t entirely sure about his future plans, he is certain about one thing, his music will always be a part of them.

Underhill was born in Chicago, and he was adopted a few days later. He lived in Yorkville with his family for most of his life.

“It’s a small town — whatever happens gets around very fast,” he said. “It’s small, and I like it that way.”

When Underhill was growing up, his father played a lot of classic rock music. Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney in particular made a strong impression on the young boy. He enjoyed their music, but he was impressed by the way they performed.

“It seemed like the coolest feeling, people shaking (hands), head banging, people chanting your name,” Underhill said. “I wanted to experience it; I wanted to play rock ’n’ roll.”

He started playing guitar when he was eight. When he was 14, he performed for the first time at Power Chord Academy music camp’s final show.

“I wasn’t much a singer, (but) I thought, it was the first time for everything,” he recalled.

What was his first performance like?

“It was frightening. It was terrifying, actually,” Underhill said. “I couldn’t see anyone, because lights were in my eyes. It was scary the first time, but (since then) I don’t feel more at home than when I’m on stage.”

He continued working on his music. In Feb. 14, 2012, he released “Introducing Luke Underhill,” an acoustic CD featuring six covers and three original songs. In November 2013, he released his first completely original album, “Back in November.”

Since then, some of the songs from his album gained wider attention.

“I belong to you” got some airplay at KGUP 106.5 FM, a Los Angeles-based radio station that seeks to help talented emerging artists get more exposure. Another song, “Prom,” made it to the semi-finals of the latest International Songwriting Competition.

The House of Blues gig came about almost by accident. Underhill originally offered to help out a friend’s band that was scheduled to participate in the July show. But in the run-up to the show, its organizers decided they liked him enough to not only ask him to perform but to make him a headliner.

Underhill splits his time between doing gigs throughout the Chicago area and working on his second album, “Atlas.” Like “Back to November,” it is inspired by his own life.

“Every song has its own back story,” Underhill said. “Me, only just graduating high school, it’s about living the life as an 18-year-old dude.”

The fact that he was adopted influences his song writing as well.

“Its rough to deal with, not knowing where I came from, how my (birth) mom is doing,” he said.

Many times, songs give Underhill a way to express something he can’t quite put into plain words.

“There is this girl in my life, she’s my No. 1 supporter,” he said. “I love her dearly, but I don’t know how to tell her, so I wrote a song.”

Now that he has graduated from high school, Underhill is weighing his options.

“I’m probably going to go to community college for the first year,” he said. “After that, I don’t know. Music is never going to leave me. It’s going to be hard to stop, and I don’t want to.” - Aurora Beacon News

Bio

With diverse influences ranging from Gavin DeGraw and Bruce Springsteen to Ed Sheeran and Ben Folds, the multi-talented 23-year-old singer/songwriter, Luke Underhill, is making his mark in the format. Earning a reputation as the new age ‘piano man,’ the Chicago native’s emotional renditions of his songs have already earned him comparisons to a young John Mayer – while some more upbeat arrangements inspire exciting flashes of early Bryan Adams. Since the release of his debut studio EP The Left Side in 2017, Underhill has worked diligently to hone his skills as a songwriter, musician and artist.

Combining his mystically old soul and unique take at songwriting, Underhill is gearing up to release his sophomore studio EP entitled "Illuminations" with hit producer Warren Huart (The Fray, Marc Broussard, Korn, Aerosmith, Better Than Ezra) at the helm. The forthcoming, 5-song EP embodies Underhill’s vision for his music and portrays how much the versatile artist has come into his own in the past year.

As an independent artist, Underhill’s fanbase has grown significantly since his debut. With more than 113K streams on Spotify, 816K YouTube views and more than 20K followers on social media, the singer-songwriter has certainly struck a chord with his story telling ability and unique sound.

When I first heard Luke Underhill's voice and read his lyrics I knew I had to work with him," said producer Warren Huart. "Luke is the artist I’ve been waiting for ever since I first heard The Fray’s demo of "Cable Car" sitting in a Studio Car Park in a Ford F150 Truck. Luke reminds me of everything we want in an Artist. I’m so excited for people to hear his music."

The future proves to be bright for this budding star as he splits his time between Chicago, LA and Nashville writing, recording and playing shows. His new project Illuminations will be released on April 12th 2019 and features 5 tracks all penned by Underhill.
