LUM

BandPopFolk

LUM is about making finely crafted pop songs in the singer-songwriter tradition and inserting them into the contemporary moment, creating a unique Electro-Folk sound. What results from all this is an intelligent mix of bedroom pop and club-banger; where brain meets booty.

Biography

From the dingy basement of his parents house on Lake Huron, Liam Sanagan spent his summer in a makeshift studio where he produced his first collection of solo songs, a four track EP. Since the dissolving of his band Paper Shaker in 2006, he has spent his time rediscovering music, experimenting heavily with recording and new technologies for producing music. Adopting his nickname ‘LUM’ in an attempt to separate himself from the dozens of singer-songwriters of his new hometown of Guelph, Ontario, he began both producing hip-hop and electro inspired music and remixes, while also committing himself to arranging songs on piano and guitar, inspired by some of his song-writing heroes, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Eventually, between playing acoustic shows and DJing all night parties, the two musical sensibilities collided. On-stage, LUM rocks an acoustic guitar backed by pounding beats, going at times from disco-house inspired giddiness to intimate folk moments.

Lyrics

The Moon Has a Face

Written By: Liam Sanagan

Goodness graciously! Lord have mercy, mercy me!
Let me try taking over, how hard could it be?
I've been a youth magnificently.

It's just what it seems: new month, new girl of my dreams.
When I clear my throat, it's my daddy's voice.
When I sing a note, when I make a choice.

And I’ve made a few based on a series of lies,
Like: nobody, getting better, dies.

You were older by the shore.
One, two, maybe three years more.
Took a long drag of your first cigarette,
I jumped in and I held my breath.

All that we expect, underwater and well-dressed,
Blows like a bubble on New Years day.
You say: “Well that can’t be it...!”

Someone told me:
“Wait for her, she will make the first move
And It’ll feel so right, Like a tongue in groove.
The time will come, you will be together soon.”
But when you wait, there is nothing but the moon.

I was so shy, I’m surprised I could even stand
If any girl would try to touch my hand.

“But wait for her, she will make the first move
And It’ll feel so right, like a tongue in groove.
The time will come, you will be together soon.”
But when you wait, there is nothing but the moon.

But don’t wait for her, cause’ she won’t make the first move,
No matter how hard you want her to.
The time is right, you could be together soon!
But if you wait, there is nothing but the moon.

Set List

Recent sets have looked like this (electric meaning 'with ipod playing drums & etc'):

The Evenings
Conquering Hearts
Timbaland (electric)
00 after 20 (electric)
Somebody to Write a Song About
Esperonto
Animal/Mechanical
The Moon Has a Face
Free & Easy (electric)
Reaction (electric)

This would be a longer running set, at about 1 hour. I often will not play the songs marked 'electric', resulting in an acoustic, folky 45 minute set.
