The best kept secret in music

"CMJ New Music Report: A&R Alert"

EP2 (Self-Released)
The posthumous fame of Jeff Buckley can often consume a new band's budding reputation-becuase once that comparison has been made, keeping the initial grip on a listener's attention can be like trying to get a Ritalin-deprived child to focus on a soap opera. While Nashville-based quintet Lume borrows, however, it never steals. The band's second EP - appropiratley titled EP2 - builds the sound that bridges its first release and an upcoming full-length due in 2004; "Air" and "Ghost of John Wayne" are very stylistically different, but both grow into their choruses, either via rhythmic basslines or lush string arrangements. Last year, Lume snuck its way into the CMJ Top 100 within five weeks of offering up its first EP, and with the release of EP2, the band snagged the No. 6 spot in the CMJ Radio 200 Adds for the period ending Nov. 4. So, as more and more listeners tune in to its music, Lume shows much promise in surpassing its influences and decking itself out in a whole new wardrobe of self-made aural apparel.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Introducing Lume, the sound of shimmering guitar rock and a story about five people who formed a band to write and play meaningful songs with real honesty and passion. The band has a distinguished themselves through their captivating music, relentless touring, and a burning passion for songs erupting with energy and meaning.

“We’ve been sicere about what we do from the beginning-we want to make you feel something,” says singer Tom Hockensmith.

Officially forming in the summer of 2000, Lume’s musical vision has always remained one of originality and integrity. The musical and lyrical content of their material runs as deep and is as varied as the members’ personalities. The songs are catchy but sincere, unique but natural, complex but organic, dark but uplifting. To many listeners, this is a refreshing twist on an otherwise dull and predictable musical landscape.

Lume’s debut EP (titled Extended Play), a basement recording released independently, received a welcoming response from college radio airwaves in the fall of 2002, peaking at #98 on the CMJ Top 200 Albums Chart. In November 2003, Lume began their second college radio promotion with their latest project, EP2. Quickly surpassing its predecessor, EP2 peaked at #82 and remained for an unprecedented seven straight weeks. Subsequently earning a review in the CMJ print publication. In addition, the five-song collection is gaining national attention though both the band’s steady touring of over 10 U.S. markets as well as multiple placements on both NBC and MTV.

Ultimately, Lume hopes to continue effecting the ears and minds of as many listeners as possible by presenting them with tasteful, sincere and passionate energy found in their music. With a full-length project scheduled for release in the fall of 2004, the music world is eagerly anticipating with is sure to be a testament to the bright future of Lume.
