"Lunie 3:80-Goodbye to the World: Album Review"

After listening to “Good bye to the World” From S.O.A.K. (Sons of A King) artist and ATL MC Lunie 380 the first phrase that came to my mind was, You know you are from the south when . . . That is no disrespect at all when you consider the things that some of the southern rappers brought to the rap game in general. I recall when a lot of rap was so aggressive. The south injected the way they live into the tapestry of their rhymes. Where as the cities in the north were sometimes bustling and busy with activity the south seemed to have a relaxed and subdued vibe which reflects in some of the music. On the flip side of that the energy that the south brings is so intense that they had to name it!

AdvertisementThe Krunk movement has influence that stretches from coast to coast. The south also was responsible in my opinion for bringing the 808 kick drum back to popularity between artists and producers alike. In my estimation this album is the epitome of southern swag and heart felt lyrics that spill out of the speakers as if Lunie had opened up a portal to his life and experiences for the listener to journey through.

The first stop on the journey would be the laid back joint “Who am I” which is an introspective track that deals with searching your self for your true identity in Christ. The track itself has a kind of dark grimy feel to it as well as a vocal sample with horns that give the overall track balance. This track reminds you of something Outkast would have kicked to back in the day.

Secondly the Jesus anthem Christ Repper acts as a call to arms so to speak to the believer as well as a prompt to the non-believer to join the Christian ranks. What I really liked about this song was in true southern fashion it has that sing songy chanting. “ I’m a Christ repper. I’m a Christ repper all day. This is surely one track that will get the praise going if you like to get your Two step on!

Other notable tracks include the symphony sample laden title track “Good bye to the world” this song speaks of counting up the cost and making a decision to sever your ties with the world’s system and pledge your allegiance to the King of kings and lord of lords. The melodic flow of this song at times put you in mind of vintage Bone Thugs the way the lines are presented. Also, the sample in the hook of this song is very catchy.

Auto tune on the voice of an artist ala T pain is a popular thing these days. Lunie throws his hat in the ring ( no pun intended)with the song 39 lashes, actually the track is banging. The whole gist of the song is an evangelist approach to explain Lunie’s belief in Christ.

“Good bye to the world” definitely reps the south stylistically but has enough diversity to speak to people wherever they are. There were a couple of tracks that were not so kid friendly, not in a way that is vulgar but in a way that briefly deals with adult issues such as “It gets hard enough” and “I’m praying for you.”

One of the hardest things I found out reviewing this album was actually singling out tracks. Goodbye to the world has 20 tracks on the cd as well as several bonus tracks. One impressive thing to me apart from the album was if you visit Lunie's My space page it shows he has recorded or featured in at least four other albums. ( That southern grind yessir)And is part of a conglomerate of mc's including Judah Man and Yung Semaj. All and all goodbye to the world is an honest album recorded by a believer who is passionate about his life in Christ as well as the life of others. I would definitely suggest this album if you are a fan of Pettidee or Mr Del, or just like banging Krunk Beats.

With 20 brand new blazing original songs written and performed by Lunie 3:80 with features from Yung Semaj, Chrys Jones, and Octavia Harris. Lunie is back like he never left going hard for GOD like never before. With the theme of this album Lunie shows listeners how to take a moment out to get away from the daily stress and strain of the World and seek after the amazing love and grace of GOD. What inspired the title Goodbye to the World? "Well as I began the preporation of making a new album, I started to recognize the ways that the simplest of things were keeping my family and I divided and away from developing a more nurturing relationship with the almighty father." Therefore, "I needed to seek less of me and MORE of him. I needed to say goodbye to the world and hello Jesus." On such tracks as the title track "Goodbye to the Wold" Lunie does just that. On the R&P inspired "Holy Love", Lunie talks about how God is needed to resolve relationship issues. On tracks such as "Christ Repper" and the Auto-Tune influenced "39 Lashes"; Lunie demonstrates pure passion to seek after GOD and reminds listeners of the life that Jesus sacrificed so that we may see eternal life. Over all this album promises to be an effective tool for any Christian or new found believer seeking to be more like the christ.
