Bio

Honored as the best Collegiate Classical Group in Downbeat magazine’s 34th annual Student Music Awards, the Lux Quartet has been described as “fantastic” (Jacob TV), “passionate” (Christian Century Magazine) and “absolutely outstanding” (Tom Washatka, jazz saxophonist and composer). The quartet is named Lux (Latin for “Light”) because of its mission to enlighten listeners to new saxophone sounds and repertoire and to inspire young musicians to experience the artistic and personal rewards of performing chamber music.

Combining technical virtuosity, improvisation, and intense musical commitment, the Lux Quartet’s repertoire includes electroacoustic music, works by leading contemporary composers, improvisatory music for didgeridu and saxophones, jazz, standard saxophone quartet repertoire, concertos for saxophone quartet and orchestra and wind ensemble, and transcriptions of 18th century instrumental works. The Lux Quartet’s collaboration with young composers has given birth to many new quartet pieces.

Winner of the 2011 Neale-Silva Young Artist’s Competition of Wisconsin Public Radio and the 2010 Lawrence Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Lux Quartet has performed in recitals on Wisconsin Public Radio and in venues ranging from concert halls to public schools, libraries, and community centers. Members of the quartet have won numerous awards in solo and concerto competitions, including competitions sponsored by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble, and Wisconsin Public Radio. The Lux Quartet continues to bring its compelling performance practices and exciting repertoire to new audiences and to introduce young musicians to the art of chamber music performance through its masterclasses for young performers.
