"Simple Little Equation"

This was an album that I was looking forward to hearing, and let me tell you, it surely did not disappoint me. L.W. Perry’s Simple Little Equation is something of wonderment, and it is as beautiful as it is intricate.

Perry’s guitars and his vocals are top-notch and stay brilliant throughout the entire album. When listening to this record, I cannot help but think that the instrumentals, such as the wonderful track Home, would be best suited as the score of a video game of some kind. I was thinking it would fit perfectly with a cut-scene, or the end credits of a Final Fantasy game. It just seems to possess that certain sort of epic sound, and the imagery created by his guitar work is some of the best I have ever come across.

Whether or not Perry is singing is irrelevant, because the scene-setting, mood enhancing guitars get the job done themselves. But when he does sing, like on tracks No More Reasons and Surrogate Life, his vocals are on par with a lot of others, and they add a specific quality to his body of work that makes the overall finalized product that much better. Think of any good hard rock CD you own. Now think of the ones that end with delicate, emotional ballads. Think of how much you love to listen to those tracks and how much you love to sing along. Now, just picture an entire record filled with songs just like that.

Perry’s playing is not always reserved and hushed; it can be powerful as well. Take a listen to Carpel Tunnel to see exactly what I’m talking about. This is a great track and is also a nice showcase of what Perry can do with an amped up, electric guitar. His riffing soars above all else, and his soloing is both chugging and shredding. Even though it is instrumental, you can get the idea of what Perry is capable of, both acoustically or electrically.

Simple Little Equation is full of musical gems that are sure to make you think and feel, and above all else, hold your attention and make you really listen. This has become my favorite CD for the moment, and it really should be yours too. - Brian Campbell, Buffalo at Home
