Lykin announces new album, CD release party

Lykin Got a MySpace message today from Lykin frontman Bhaan, letting me know about the group will release a new album Aug. 8 at Planet Rock.

The album, an 8-track E.P. called "DEAD PLANET RED," will be the band's second, following last year's "Throne to the Wolves," which is available for purchase at the group's Web site.

The release show is going to be big, Bhaan said. They're headlining and bringing bands.

Lykin has turned itself into a major player in the Battle Creek music scene, helping organize Planet Rock's increasingly-popular all-ages shows and last month's big-draw battle of the bands. Formed roughly in October 2006, the group's played with such major-label acts as (hed)p.e.

When I first interviewed the band for a story in October, the group talked heavily about the local scene and its need to infused with support from the local bands and music heads. The venues can't go it alone, the musicians said, they need help from music activists.

I think Bhaan's right on that one, and it's something I've believed for a long time. Like any sort of economic development project, it takes effort and involvement and volunteerism from the entire community. We can't sit back and complain that there's no scene in Battle Creek. We need to get active, get involved, plan, seek participation, raise funds, and make it happen ourselves. The venues can't go it alone. - Bat Creek Enquirer WOW section

"A Band With A Statement, LYKIN Brings A Different Mix To Its Goth Roots"

In European mythology, a lykin is a creature that has the ability, or the curse, to become something more than what it already is, such as a werewolf.

When five Battle Creek musicians came together, they saw this evolution in themselves, and took the name LYKIN.

"When LYKIN first started out, in the beginning it was more or less a Goth band," vocalist BHaan said. "Today, we mix a lot of different styles in our music. I mean, there's punk rock, there's metal, there's hardcore, and then there's the Goth element as well. We took a look at the band situation and said,'OK, this is what we've done. Now we wanna do something completely different, make it better.' And it just kinda stuck with us."

The band formed nearly a year ago from pieces of other bands that had dissolved.

The band's sound is like the soundtrack to a classic B- movie horror film amped up with heavy metal guitar licks and BHaan's throaty screams. Keyboardist Debb Sheppard makes eerie sound effects that blend into melodic, minor-key melodies of the songs. Guitarist Will Higgins handles chunky, low-end guitar riffs broken with pinch harmonics and quick melody licks. Bassist Scott Farly keeps a driving low-end going and drummer Mike Brand ties it all together.

With titles like "HolyWAR," "Ghetto Dracula" and "Death Moon," LYKIN's songs traverse a moody road that its members say is meant to speak truths about the musicians' beliefs. Taking on what the bands calls George W. Bush's abuse of governmental powers and raising questions of religion and mysticism, the band takes pride in the First Amendment.

"As far as how we write, we mean to be very controversial," BHaan said. "I will tell the truth. I will use every right I have provided by the Constitution of the United States. I have problems with things that are out there, so obviously I'm gonna speak about it. I will invoke my freedom of speech.

"Basically, what we wanna do is, we wanna have fun, but we want to tell the truth."

Being a band with a statement can sometimes be a risky proposition. Strong convictions in one way or another can either skyrocket a band to acclaim or cut it at the throat, depending on the audience the band presents its ideals to. The members of LYKIN say they've received nothing but support so far.

"I think the response [to our songs] has been some devil horns and a "Hell Yeah,' pretty much," BHaan said with a laugh. "I've never had one person come up to me and say 'Hey, that was out of line.' It's not my place to be rude, not my place to be attacking, but I want to create awareness.

"I've had people come up to me and say, 'I really understand what you are saying.' And that, to me, is cool because I sit here and create some lyrics, and that's the beginning of a piece of music and somebody else remembers them and says, 'Hey, you know what I really felt that' "

"If somebody picks up on that, that means that we've done our job," Higgins said.

The strongest support for the band, however, come from within. With BHaan, Sheppard and Brand all living in the same house, LYKIN is more a family than a group, its members say. The musicians lean on each other and help each other feel free with their creativity.

"I've worked with a couple different musicians in the past and it was just so, ' this is what you say, this is what you do, this is what we wanna try to be, 'and I don't wanna be something I'm not," BHaan said. "It's the passion that everybody (in LYKIN) has. It the freedom of knowing that I can play what I wanna play. I don't feel limited." - Battle Creek Enquirer WOW Section Oct 18, 2007

"Dead Planet Red CD Review"

More metal bands need to say something as important as Lykin vocalist B HAAN does on "911," his response to the suicides of those who were trapped inside the twin towers. Plenty of thrashers growl about desperation from suburban safety, but Lykin attempts to take people to other places(including a not-too-distant planet) and make them rethink life and their beliefs. The self Described "(hed)pe version of Rage Against the Machine", Lykins atmospheric metal hits just as hard physically as it does mentally on "saveUS_killUS", etc. the band will release "Dead Planet Red" Aug. 8 at Planet Rock in Battle Creek before playing this years Summer of Mayhem at the Kzoo State Theatre Aug.23 Listen now at myspace.com/lykinrules -Eric Mitts - Recoil magazine

Bio

All of the members bring musical influences of Rock, Goth, Punk Rock, Hip Hop, and Metal.
Some influences include (hed)pe, inflames, Dimmu Borgir, Marilyn Manson, Rage Against the Machine, Cross Breed
Combining all of these elements sets us apart from most bands, adding Keyboards creates more mood and atmosphere with a high energy performance live.
LYKIN formed in Late 2006 in the remnants of a cover band.
Vocalist B Haan and Guitarist Will Higgins (who are no longer with LYKIN) joined the group in Late 2006 adding a new direction along with founding member Debb Sheppard.
What makes us successful is having the opportunity to take music beyond its limits. There are so many bands that say you must sound like this or you must say or not say that. LYKIN breeches all barriers of music while creating awareness politically and having fun at the same time. We want to tell the truth and create awareness but we want to acknowledge the good times in life.

LYKIN has opened for such national acts as (HED)PE,DOPE, BOBAFLEX, KINGSPADE, OTEP, EYES SET TO KILL, ANEW REVOLUTION, NONPOINT, TAPROOT and AS SUMMER DIES.
Over the course of their career, LYKIN has performed in numerous venues and night clubs throughout Michigan and have had the privilege of sharing the stage with bands such as Know Lyfe, Ill Hollow Chamber, Ritual Suicide, Beyond All Reckoning, Seeing Eye God, Vintage, Release the Crimson, Malakai, Lung Worm, Vulkmar (Australia), A Blaze of Glory, Stilframe, King of the Forest, .Com E, Arms of Automation, Anacorts Burns, Dues Ex Machina, Left of Zero, Mr Denton on Doomsday, Massaugah, Hero of None, Remnants, Radial Atrophy, Mainbrace, Eye Remain, Reef Theory, Slapp Maggy, Dez Lotuss, Burn The Sky, Trial By Fire, Idle Threat, Ground Effect, Colasi’ Omen, McArthur City Saints, Pagen, Swamp Shark, Devience In The Mirror, Battle Cross, Foreground, Forgotten Forgiveness, Krank Nine, Ebonhand, Brutal, Kopis Red, Sons of the Revolution, Origin of Fate, Seneca, Bonk, Shutter, 3 Feet To Fall, Falling Unbroken, Robin Thrasher, 10 Guage Rage, and Bad Monkey.
