"Building schools is Lylah’s Purpose"

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Lylah’s Purpose hopes to be so much more than just some fly-by-night rock band.

14-year-old lead guitarist Lylah Purpus hopes she can raise enough money through her music to build a school in a needy country.

Purpus, along with band members Corby Deutsch, David Coe, and Robert Golenor started the band just five months ago to help raise money for Hug-It-Foward, a program within the nonprofit Manifest Foundation. The program uses recycled materials, such as glass bottles, to build green and low-cost schools in third world countries with the help of volunteers.

It costs $12,000 to build each school and that is the first goal Lylah’s Purpose hopes to reach by the end of the year.

“As a band, we all think a lot alike and this is just something that is really important to Lylah,” said Charley Lickliter, band manager.

Lylah’s Purpose kicked-off their first recycling drive this week in an effort to begin raising money. They are collecting aluminum cans, car batteries, even entire cars if necessary which they will trade for cash at a local recycling center.

“We were thinking this was just a great way to think green locally and build schools out of trash in other places,” Lickliter said.

The band will do a variety of recycling activities throughout the holiday season, but the main event will take place at 10 p.m. Sunday at Tenacious Bros. Pub. Cover charge is either a bag of recyclables, or $5. All proceeds will be given to Hug-It-Forward.

Direct donations can also be made at Stay Classy. Band members are willing to pick up any recyclable donations and can be reached through their Facebook page, Lylah’s Purpose. - Daily Sentinel by Richie Ashcraft
