Versatile Musician Has Local Connection

West Chester Feb 24, 2005 Even though Lynda McLaughlin has yet to release
her debut album, she's a music veteran who knows
where she's coming from and where she's going.

Tonight, McLaughlin will make her area debut at The Point in Bryn Mawr.

While McLaughlin used a full band on her newalbum, "Just When You
Thought" (which is set for release this spring), most of her live shows are duets featuring her and her guitarist. The guitarist just happens to be her father, Donn McLaughlin.

"I've been playing shows since I was 16," said McLaughlin, a New York resident who was born and raised in Philadelphia. "The thing with my dad -we've been doing it whole-heartedly for the last four years.

"He's a musician and a master electronics engineer. He has his own company (McLaughlin Enterprises). He wired all of
Veterans Stadium and did work for a lot of major artists. But he gave it up when I decided to do music full-time.

"We do all the songwriting together. The lyrics are
mostly mine, but we work on the music together. I play clarinet, guitar, sax and violin - and rhythm
guitar in our live shows."

McLaughlin recorded the new album last spring in
Brooklyn.

"It was me and my dad doing all the parts. My dad plays all the guitar parts and some of the keyboards. The songs were all
at least five years old. We had about 500 songs and narrowed it to 15. Then the producers narrowed
it down to 10."

The album is a showcase for McLaughlin's rich, expressive voice and well-crafted lyrics - and the father-daughter duo's abundant musical talents.

"Last year, we did a number of shows with a full band - including the Austin City Limits Festival in Texas," she said. "Then,
when we came back to New York, we did the acoustic duo thing and got great feedback. We
added a percussionist and a cello player for our liveshows."

McLaughlin, who comes from a very musical family, started playing music at 7, when she was introduced to the violin.

"After that, I started with piano when I was 12, clarinet when I was 14 and sax when I was 16," she said. "I went to Performing Arts School in Philadelphia and then to a theater school in New York. I was a hip-hop dancer on MTV back in 1999 and spent a few years singing in cover bands in New York.

"Then I decided I was going to make my own music. With my live shows, I'm the M.C. - the person who leads the band. I'm also a partner in a new nightclub here in the city (New York) called Love. It opens the first weekend in March.

"Even though the album isn't out yet, we've already started writing songs for the next album. For me, the whole point of music is writing from the heart. That's what's missing from a lot of today's music."

Bio

We are a father/daughter team or duo with the help of a great percussionist. We play acoustically and it has been amazing. I guess the fact that there is a father/daughter element to this band also makes us a little different. We split the difference on the range of influences from the Beatles to Sarah MacLachlan. We're different because we don't pretend to be like everyone else or anyone else. We're just two people out to make a great music and share great music.
