"New Music: Lyra"

Take manic funk, powerful pop choruses, and heady, jazzy interludes. Now pack them all into one big, colorful ball. Now you’ve got yourself a handful Lyra.

The Canadian band met back at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, but only official formed in its current incarnation in 2010. They’ve garnered a lot of attention since then, both in the Toronto music scene and in the press.

"New Release: LYRA – EP"

Toronto indie rock 4-piece Lyra recently came up on our radar. Since that time, we’ve had trouble not hitting the repeat button on their debut self-titled EP.

With that being said, have a listen to the release in the Bandcamp player below – we’re really feeling Clock’s Opinion and 9/10.

Bio

After meeting through a children’s acting group Justin (keyboards) and Matt (guitar) began swapping musical ideas almost immediately, finding mutual interest in 80s pop music. Soon the two began writing music together and developing their sound. While both attending an arts high school they met Felix (drums) and Saul (bass), who had played together as the rhythm section in projects, drawing influence from psychedelic rock and jazz.

By late winter of 2010, the four musicians had written a number of songs and played a number of shows under questionable aliases before settling on Lyra. With collaboration, a unique and layered sound emerged.

Lyra soon recorded their self-titled EP over a period of two days in July 2011 at a studio on the outskirts of Toronto. With help from engineer Dajaun Martineau (Cancer Bats, Big Sugar) and mastering by Noah Mintz (Broken Social Scene, The National), Lyra EP was born. A time was had by all.
