Lyrics Devine Biography

They say great things can come from the strangest of places, and Lyrics Devine is no exception. A virtual unknown haling from Waterloo, Iowa, this emcee continues to defy the status quo and fulfill his dream of becoming a respected artist in music today. Growing up in a place defined more by its main exports (corn) then its hip hop culture as proven difficult for this artist considering his lifelong passion for rap. Lyrics first grow his love for hip hop after listening to Snoop Dogg's; Doggystyle at the tender age of 12. He loved snoop's smooth delivery and flow but could not relate to the gangster lifestyle in his lyrics. Lyrics Devine continued to build an appreciation for hip hop through other well respected artists over the years, (Ice Cube, Jay z, Twista, Scarface, Wu tang, Nas, Bone Thugs and Harmony Mobb Deep etc...) But it wasn't until his late teens that he discovered artists that truly struck a cord to his own creativity. After buying a CD created from well known hip hop vet Common Sense called "Resurrection", Lyrics became engulfed in the Creative concepts in each of Common's songs. He studied Common’s detailed story telling abilities in each songs and considers Commons most well known song "I used to love her" to be one of the greatest songs in hip hop.
As the years passed Lyrics went from a loyal fan to a "hip hop historian" always collecting anything that would quench his thirst for this music. Lyrics Devine began to slowly distance himself from the commercial aspect of hip hop and began to search for untapped underground hip hop artists, and as years passed he found more conscious styled artists that have later grown too well respected emcees in music today. (Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Slum Village, Dead Prez, MF DOOM, Murs, Devin the Dude.) Lyrics first began writing songs at the late age of 19 after a hip hop session with childhood friend, Double OO. Double OO was a member of hip hop group PYP and invited Lyrics to listen to some new songs they had made. After Listening to some instrumentals lyrics began to try to freestyle alongside Double OO with the cipher between the two lasting almost 2 hours. Double OO began to teach Lyrics How to make a verse and songs and soon after, the group allowed Lyrics to join. Lyrics credits Double OO for helping him as an artist today. As time as pasted Lyrics as developed into a raw talent with still untapped potential, he has sense moved to Minneapolis Minnesota in hopes of becoming part of a well respected hip hop underground culture. He feels that now is a perfect time to show the world. He describes his style as "R&B Conscious hip hop", with is main musical influences today being artists like Brother Ali, Lauryn Hill, and Kanye West. Lyrics Devine is currently promoting his debut mixtape called “There Will be Blood” and hopes to have his official album “The Craft” out by the end of the year.
