Bio
A former orchestra student, Maal’s reputation in hip-hop was built as much on his behind-the-scenes musical sensibility as it was on standout verses on group projects and features. Yet his decision to step out as a solo artist meant putting “reputation” aside and opening himself up to an even more intimate, uninhibited voice and artistry.
The first taste of Maal Himself the solo artist was 2011’s “Ms. Beverly Hills” — an infectious, bouncy single that made both Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco take notice of the Milwaukee-based emcee. Produced by Freek Van Workum (Netherlands) and based on recent personal struggles, it confirmed that following his intuition and inclination to experiment was the right move.
Today, Maal is in the process of building a new reputation — one rooted in strong structure and substance and brought to life through dynamic, experimental live shows. He’s all-at-once metaphorical, catchy, witty, conceptual, funny, melodic and deeply personal. More than anything though, Maal is…Himself.
Fresh off of being added to MTV Artists, Maal recently took the stage with Pharoahe Monch, EmC, Mickey Factz, and many others at the world's largest hip hop festival A3C in Atlanta, GA. Also, he also was introduced by MTV personality Sway, whom debuted his group's(EMP Gang) Good Misery, Bad Company Album several months prior on his website.
Maal’s solo and group projects have been featured by 2DopeBoyz, AllHipHop.com, Kanye University, LupeFiasco.com, Sway’s Universe, ThisIs50.com and VladTV. Follow him on Twitter @maalhimself.
