In person, Machines in Heaven only ever look cool by accident.
They drink in a spit n sawdust pub, tucked away where Glasgow city centre transforms into the affluent west-end, & yet, like some members of the band, is still haunted by the dark side of 'Mini-Gotham'. Several cultures & ages live & drink vibrantly together in this area, perfectly suiting MiH's personal/creative openness & approachability - they pass the time of day with any punter, song, or idea that drops in from an interesting angle. You sense MiH are traditional, boho Glasgow after all, thus the older drinkers in their local always have time for them.

Hype is consistently growing. Billboard magazine named them as one of 5 Glasgow bands to watch, Scotland's most powerful music-industry people picked them to play T in The Park and their debut ‘Glasgow Jihad’ EP, via netlabel Black Lantern Music, had 7000 downloads within 2 months of its release. They feel fortunate - their confidence comes from being blessed with natural musical ability, though there's disarmingly candid humility mixed in with the unwavering drive forward.
Band members regularly attend or perform at noise gigs and experimental theatre shows in damp basements: MIH first aired their new set at their friends’ wonderfully makeshift 'Little Bit of Theatre' night in late winter 2012, using the pseudonym 'ANOMOL'.
To add to the hype, they were recently asked to remix ‘Cold City Avalanche’ for Roddy Hart, which is retailing on a physical release as a B-side.

In their own words: "We were learning parts & rehearsing whenever & wherever we could, whilst 3 of us were sofa-surfing & getting the odd fiver & tenner together to eat something decent & pay for a drink or 2. We were paranoid because 2 guitars had tuning issues, we'd no tuning pedals & our weird time signatures initially made us all trip up. We were broke, losing weight & getting fuck all sleep."
Despite the hype, they still show up to gigs with equipment wrapped in binbags, a little grumpy at each other, & tend to nip off to their favoured local after soundcheck, their clothes rumpled, dark rings under their smiling eyes.

Upon first meeting them, if your love of music is so pervasive as to be approaching something religious or psychiatric, you become an honorary member of 'Team Machines'. You will most likely end up feeding one or more of them, possibly providing a roof over their heads, and, eventually dating one of them until you become self-conscious about your ever-increasing laughter lines & sleep-deprivation.

To sum up opinion regarding their recordings and live shows, the consensus seems to be,

"How good are Machines in Heaven by the way?"

(In Glasgow, that's a statement - the highest accolade, and not a question)
