Biography

recorded in her living room in the summer of 2006, mackenzie grant’s latest album, "the laundry room glamour hour," is a scaled-down, home-grown, delicious pop-folk treat for the ears.

“i wanted to take it back to square-one with this thing,” said mackenzie regarding the minimalist approach to the album. “i had gotten away from what was real to me musically, and it almost killed me.” so she called up friend and nashville drummer, jason hoffheins, to set about a new, fresh direction. “jason has been a nashville music scene staple for years now, and there’s really nothing he can’t do. he mentioned he was looking to produce someone, and i basically jumped on his coattails from there. i told him precisely what i wanted to do with the record, and he was down with it 100%. i knew we were golden when he took a rough vocal/piano of one of the songs, added all his own instrumentation to it, and came back to me a couple days later with exactly the sound i was looking for.”

from there, mackenzie and jason co-produced a lean, mean, fightin’ machine of a record. with it’s sturdy, well-crafted songwriting, and sonically gorgeous arrangements and production, it is a work that speaks for itself. “that’s all i wanted, really, was something that represented what was real to me. like having that indescribable thought in your mind, suddenly articulated just as you imagined it.”

mackenzie currently resides in nashville, tennessee, with her husband, son and dog, ray-ray. For more information on jason hoffheins, visit: myspace.com/fileundervalued.

Lyrics

Put You Back Together Again

Written By: MacKenzie Grant

I can't look in,
I can't let go,
You're just like dynamite,
Out of control.
So I stand back,
And watch you blow,
Cover my head,
See where the pieces go.
And when it's calm,
I venture in,
To put you back together again.

Just try to breathe,
Don't even talk,
Just try to crawl,
I'll help you walk.
This is a mess,
Don't play it down,
We've got a ways to go,
to make you sound.
Let's settle in,
Then let's begin,
To put you back together again.

A broken clock,
Can still tell time,
You will run well,
You will be fine.
But all the same,
you will be changed.
You'll feel the cracks,
Recall the pain.
And on you'll go,
To seal the blow,
And put you back together again.

Why You Gotta Run

Written By: MacKenzie Grant

I watched you pack your things up
As I followed to the car
And I wondered where you'd go
and how far
I remember that you told me
That running was fun
Now tell me why you gotta run from everyone

Oh Lizzie's gonna' miss you
And Lee will be upset
And Baby's gonna' cry those tears
cold and wet
If you're leaving then don't linger
Like another setting sun
Tell me why you gotta run from everyone

There's a formula to sadness
You mix up jealousy and hate
You blame your failures on the only one who loves you
then you wait

Oh Texas gets so fickle
She will tease you like a lover
And keep you up all night
Leave you with a permanent hangover
And she might be a sure thing
Your mistress or your nun
But tell me why you gotta run from everyone

There's a rhythm to the changes
Two people overcome
But you don't even want to keep up with the beat
You just run

The girls were asking questions
Just the other day
They wonder if they had made you go away
And I tell them what you told me
That running is fun
Now tell them why you gotta run from everyone

Addiction

Written By: MacKenzie Grant

I remember you
The one I thought I lost
I thought if I could run away quickly
I'd bury you in dust
But here you are again
Unpacking your black bag
Throwing all your clothes in the closet
Now there's no need to brag
Are you staying very long
Have you been here all along
Addiction

Let's go paint the town
Let's go burn it down
I can be the boring old straight man
and you can be the clown
Whisper in my ear
Tell me your sweet lies
Only you know how bad I'm hurting
You see it in my eyes

Are you staying very long
Have you been here all along
Addiction
Are you laughing in my face
Are you happy with my disgrace
Addiction

I remember you...

Grace

Written By: MacKenzie Grant

Grace got up early and put on her face
Went to the kitchen to clean up the place
As she threw away juiceboxes left on the floor
She wondered why she doesn't smile anymore
Eight o'clock came and the kids toddled in
Her old man sat down still stinking of gin
Then she asked him a question she knew that he heard
But he didn't look up. or utter a word
She asked, "Who did I used to be?
And who am I now if you can't even see me..."

I'm Grace. Grace
I used to be someone you couldn't ignore
Grace is my name, I guess Grace isn't here anymore

Days turned to weeks and the weeks into years
Babies to kids and the milk into beer
And she watched it all pass as her dream slipped away
Of taking her name, and running away
She thought, "Who did I used to be? And who am I now if they can't even see me..."

I'm Grace, Grace
I used to be someone they couldn't ignore
Grace is my name and I guess Grace isn't here anymore

I used to sing, and play my guitar
And everyone shouted my name through the bar
I was beautiful then, maybe I'm still
But if I don't find out now, I never will

Grace lay awake in her four-poster bed
Dreaming of lives that she could've led
But he told her without him she'd never get far
So she left him a note, and jumped in the car
It read, "Maybe I'll never be free. But why should I stay when you can't even see me..."

I'm Grace, Grace
I used to be someone you couldn't ignore
Grace is my name, and now Grace isn't here anymore.
