Rodney E. Young, known publicly as the rapper/producer Mack Rodd was born and raised in Orange Mound-Memphis, TN. He was molded and influenced by the streets of Orange Mound with its tight knit sense of community, soulful musical heritage, and often-deadly underworld. His mother was the head of the household and his key role model. Growing up, he listened to her flavor of music, which included Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Earth Wind & Fire. These influences, coupled with a stint in the school band, greatly influenced Mack Rodd’s love for music and helped him acquire a sharp musical ear.
Mack Rodd developed a strong interest for rap during the earliest period of the genre. He acknowledges artists such as NWA, Big Daddy Kane and Run DMC as well as Rakim and Tupac, as his primary influences. A high school talent show kicked off a serious preoccupation with rap music and he quickly became known as one of the best lyricist in Memphis. He wrote his music based on his life experiences growing up in the streets of Orange Mound. Knowing exactly the type of sound he wanted to create for his lyrics, he decided to produce the music himself.
At the invitation of a friend, Mack Rodd visited Atlanta for the weekend to check out the music scene. He performed at a few open mics and observed the vibrant music scene. It was then he decided Atlanta is where he wanted to live. After moving, Mack Rodd performed at every club, open mic and showcase in Atlanta making a name for himself. Since moving to Atlanta, he has won numerous awards for his lyrical prowess and exciting stage presence. Mack Rodd’s previous album, “Greedy 4 Life”, was a certified street classic and garnered nationwide distribution with 404 Music Group. He has recorded songs with numerous artists including Loon (Bad Boy), Jazzy Pha (Sho Nuff), DJ Mars (Super Friends - DJ), Nicole Wray (Electra) and Gansta Pat (Ichiban), as well produced the sound track for the movie “Groupies” starring Big Gipp of Goodie Mobb & Crystal Wilson of Players Club Fame.
He has evolved through several transformations, starting as M.C. Rodd and becoming the artist he is today, MACK RODD. Mack Rodd labels his rap style as “Southern, Gumbo Funk”. His latest creative production, “Let Me Holla At Cha Shawty”, written and produced entirely by the artist himself, is garnering radio & club attention at a rapid pace. Mack Rodd is poised to be the next big southern act in Atlanta’s storied legacy of great Southern Hip-Hop.
