Nigerian born. DC raised. Madarocka’s music is what happens when hip-hop and rock gang-bang neo-soul and raise their child on Afro-jazz. This infusion is what sets her free. The independence is clear as the 1st lady of the S.O.U.R.C.E. embarks on her first solo project.
Madarocka started her journey in the mid 1990s as a founding member of the Nigerian chart-topping, hip-hop quartet S.O.U.R.C.E. International Clique. With this team, she performed with the likes of Wu-tang, Busta Rhymes, Buju Banton, and KRS-One to crowds of 5,000 or more. Often, after a set, the other artists would compliment Madarocka’s voice, lyrics and passion for performance. This type of exchange led to Madarocka becoming the first female MC to be featured on a track by the Boot Camp Click, and collaborating with artists like Davina.
In 2002, Alo, Madarocka’s closet sibling and member of the SI Clique, was murdered in the streets of DC. This trauma forced Madarocka to reflect and to reexamine herself and her goals. During that time she went home to Nigeria to get in touch with her spirituality and discovered the greater benefit in sharing her story through her music. The result: A powerful lady, more connected with her Nigerian roots, ready to share her stories of ”love, loss and living,” and ready to take her place among music’s royalty. Her first single “No Vain” is in tribute to her fallen soldier and is just a taste of the innovative things to come from the “African Hip-Hop Queen”.
Madarocka recently received a Nigerian Entertainment Award as Best Male/Female Hip-Hop Artist. However, she feels her greater accomplishment is the work her acclaim has allowed her to do with the youth in her community. For these reasons, she has been a featured guest on several local and satellite radio programs. In her words: “In the end, I want to be part of the solution for Nigeria, for DC… for the Third World and the slums that resemble them.”
