"Mad Bwoy on the road to success"

With a unique style, Frederick Manderson says that he has one thing on his mind ... success.

"My style is different. I have an international appeal and the drive for success," Manderson told The Star recently.

The artiste, based in New Hampshire, in the United States of America, is seeking to make a name for himself locally and that has brought him to the island to promote his music.

Originally from Port Maria, in St Mary, Manderson, who goes by the name Mad Bwoy, developed the love for music
from his older brother, Kashif Downs.

Main influence

"Music has been a part of me from birth," said Manderson. "Being around my brother helped me to hone the skills I now have. He is the main influence in my decision to pursue music as a career," he added.

Manderson said that he has been enjoying the reception he has received overseas and hopes to have the same impact in Jamaica.

After releasing his first video for his song Shake It Baby, featuring American singer Heather May, Manderson said he has been gaining much more recognition and popularity and is hoping that it will give him the necessary exposure he is seeking.

The ambitious artiste said, other than recording, he sees himself venturing into other areas of the business.

Goals

"Right now I see myself doing some choreography. I also want to test my hands at producing and to take some lessons in playing the piano and the guitar," said Manderson.

Having also recorded songs such as Dance Floor, Don't Leave and She Likes It, Manderson, who is signed to Garrison Entertainment Records, said that he is looking forward to the future and is working hard at achieving all his goals.

This week he will be shooting his second video for a song, Wining Round and Round,on the Cashflow Label.

"I am just moving full speed ahead, making the most of life and enjoying what I am doing, because it is what I love," he said. - The Jamaican Star

"Mad Bwoy Interview With Wers 88.9 fm Boston College"

April 20th, 2010

MadBwoy03WERS sat down with Fedrick "Mad-Bwoy" Manderson during Live Music Week after his in-studio performance to discuss his unique style of music, and this month's release of his self-titled album.

Mad Bwoy's music is rooted in Jamaican Reggae due to growing up in Kingston, but he adds his own touch with a variety of genre influences. Now living in New England he is hitting the Boston music scene, and introducing a new take on Reggae music.

WERS: What kind of genres of music do you try to mix together in your music?

Mad Bwoy: My music that I do is versatile and I would say feel good music because I do all types of music. I do reggae, I do pop, I do slow jam—culture music.

WERS: What would you say are your biggest musical influences?

Mad Bwoy: I would say Beres Hammand, Bounty Killer, 2pac, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown—I grew up listening to them, they are like the best reggae vocalists—when I listen to their music I feel like I'm in a different space.

WERS: You said earlier that you grew up with your brother and your uncle who do music?

Mad Bwoy: Yeah, I've got two brothers that do music—I'd have to say most of my family do music—so I was growing up listening to them, seeing them on stage at shows, wondering when I'm going to be that person. I could go to school and do something else, but sometimes in life there is one thing that you want to do, and don't care how much money you make, you ain't going to be satisfied with another job. I sacrifice a lot when it comes to my music. I go through a lot—ups and down—just because of my music and then after that I'm not going to say I'm sorry for doing music, because this is what I love and I know nothing comes easy.

WERS: How did you end up in New England?

Mad Bwoy: I used to live in Queens but New York was too much for me, I need my space [laughs]. I moved to America in 2005 and I think I spent like three months in New York before I moved up here because it was for me. I like a place that's quiet, I don't know if this is the best place for music, but one day I will figure all that out.

WERS: Do you like the music scene here?

Mad Bwoy: Yeah, I like the music scene. I go to all different type of clubs. I live in a Latino neighborhood and everyday I hear reggae-tone and maybe I don't understand [the language] but that is what I'm hearing everyday so I'm going to be used to it. And I know maybe most of them don't know what we are saying or what we're doing in reggae but music, man, don't care what u speak—Spanish, English, Japanese, anything—if the music is good you can't resist it. Music is life.

WERS: You mentioned that Reggae in Jamaica is different from Reggae in America, could you explain what some of the differences might be and how it influences your own music?

MadBwoy05Mad Bwoy: The reason why I said Reggae in Jamaica is different from Reggae in America is because when I go to Jamaica the music is more rough. If you go to Jamaica you would understand the music that they do there, because the music that is breaking into the international market is more like the singing type of Reggae and in Jamaica it is the most rough type of Reggae. So it is different.

I sing on some of the tracks and do some hardcore Jamaica music and you can find me doing music on hip-hop beats and hard-pop beats. I got my CD, I'm going to give what I can, and when you listen to my music you can see that I don't do one genre of music. It's good to be versatile in the game ya know? There is so much people doing music man so it's good to be versatile, you have to be out of the pack, stand one place by yourself.
