Eric and I arrived early and had a chance to catch Madcooks do their sound check. Having originally planned to only review Mad June this night, the Madcooks’ soundcheck immediately intrigued me. This band is fairly new, only having been together since February 2013, Madcooks-6which absolutely astounds me considering the talent and chemistry that came out of them on stage.

I introduced myself to Ben Dennis, guitarist/back up vocalist of the band. He then kindly handed me their set list and mentioned he was the organizer of the evening. I went to sit in my usual spot at Chaos at the back side table and observed as the crowd built up. The placed filled up really fast, sadly most people chilling at the bar and not so close to the stage.

Finally, Madcooks started the night around 10:30 pm and began their set with “Dirty Game,” a pop/rock song that definitely got people’s attention. Ben tried getting people to clap along – sadly the crowd did not reciprocate his eagerness but I was really digging what I was hearing. The band has the look and slight sound of Stillwater, the band from Cameron Crowe’s film “Almost Famous.”

Madcooks-8“Unpredictable” was my chosen song of the set. I loved the old school 70s rock ‘n’ roll elements of this track as it had a somewhat slow beat with some heavy guitar solos.

Ben and Mick were very interactive with the crowd and they seemed to have a lot of fun up on stage. They jumped, danced around, and played some pretty wild guitar solos. For a band that hasn’t been together that long, you would never guess it. I was swaying my head around to Mick’s solos and I was particularly fond of the Gab Prieur’s drumming and backup vocals. Louis St-Onge was uber chilled out on the right side of the stage while he played bass; he was the most one mellow of the bunch.

Having never heard these guys before, I was at a loss for words during the performance. I think they have a lot of potential and look forward to what will come next from Madcooks. - Bucketlist

Bio

Le groupe
MADCOOKS s'est formé en janvier 2013.

4 musiciens
