"Live review"

"Local songstress Madeleine Paige is unable to wipe the smile from her face throughout her set, and for good reason: her selection of heartfelt songs backed by guitar, drums and vibraphone connect well with the adoring audience. Beware: her cheery disposition is contagious. Paige concludes her set with a cover of David Gray's Shine: ever the humble and appreciative performer, she bids the crowd farewell, leaving no doubt in this reviewer's mind that I'll be hearing her golden voice again sometime soon."

"SINGLE OF THE WEEK - ANGELS IN THE ARCHITECTURE"

Is it just because I currently regard Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al as the most fun song ever conceived, or is it her beautifully comforting voice? Either way, the debut EP from Brisbane musician Madeleine Page, the name of which is a quote from Simon's Graceland tune, offers far more sweet and intelligent listening endurance than many others who claim to combine the arts of singing and songwriting.

To say Paige's songs let us in to her own world is a bit of a cliché, but quietly impassioned tracks like Not New But True and Remember? will allow you to sink into a less world weary or cynical mindset. Other self-aware songwriting – Is it her body, or is it her hair? Or is it that she just doesn't care? No, I think it's her hair – also raises a silly giggle that Neil Finn at his adorable Woodface wackiest may envy.

As far as simple yet dazzling acoustic pop songs go, Angels In The Architecture is the most unexpected collection in some time. I think it's her voice.

"Live Review - The Globe Theatre, May 08"

Next up is the ever bubbly Miss Madeleine Paige. This young lady is quickly establishing herself around the Brisbane music scene and it's very easy to see why. Her soulful soft tone coupled with peaceful string work make for a bittersweet performance of broken-hearted songwriting and tales of lost loves.

Having recently released her debut EP "Angels in the Architecture" she has a strong live catalogue to choose from and has the uncanny ability to outperform herself with each track.

From haunting numbers such as "Not New But True" and "Blues", Paige turns it around with the upbeat pop of "I Think It's Her Hair". She includes a Joan Armatrading cover of "Dry Land" as one final shining moment of vocal talent - Time Off

Turn off your phone and get out of town
Away from the chaos and deafening sound
And when all is peaceful and darkness falls
You’ll hear The Voice Behind The Noise

This is the concept behind Madeleine Paige’s stunning sophomore EP “The Voice Behind The Noise”. In October last year, on a friend’s recommendation, Madeleine left behind the daily grind and spent some time alone in a cabin in the wilderness and her creativity flourished. Through these visits to the idyllic Mullumbimby countryside, the songs on this glorious EP were born.

Uninspired by the sterile nature of traditional recording studios, Madeleine gathered her very talented friends and headed into the comfortable home studio of Matt Redlich (Hungry Kids Of Hungary). The EP was recorded over a weekend, with everyone playing live together, without any click track or headphones, to capture the energy that you feel when great musicians get in a room and jam it out. Everything on the EP, from musicians to production to art and photography, is done by Madeleine’s friends. This not only fosters a special artistic community in Brisbane, but also ensures that everyone understands her and what she’s trying to achieve.

The Voice Behind The Noise is an artistic coming of age for Madeleine. The pretty simplicity of her debut EP “Angels In The Architecture” was a fine introduction and critically acclaimed (single of the week in various street press, and national airplay on Triple J, ABC and community radio); but there’s a certain diversity, complexity and depth of meaning in this latest work.

Her upcoming The Voice Behind The Noise Tour will see Madeleine and band playing regional Queensland venues and East Coast capitals. Her live show is impressive, with audiences instantly captivated by Madeleine’s golden voice and mix of playful indie pop and divine lullabies.

The Voice Behind The Noise will be released through MGM in May ‘09 in will be available in all retailers, with the iTunes version having a special bonus ambient remix by acclaimed Sydney artist Daniel R Muller.
