Bio

Originally born as an electro/acoustic duo, Maetoba evolved grown into a one-man musical project currently supported on stage by an ever-changing array of additional musicians. Originally out of Omaha, Nebraska, Spencer Putnam drew a great deal of inspiration from the blossoming Omaha music scene famous for its Saddle Creek Records. Now located in Boston, Maetoba continues to grow from increased exposure to many varieties of electronic music including dance and jam formats. With the laptop as his primary weapon of choice and musical anchor, Putnam uses soft synths, samplers, drum-machines, traditional percussion and guitar to build a framework that is often supplemented live by players performing on didgeridoo, EWI, harmonica, saxophone, banjo, drum set and more.

After getting the opportunity to temporarily work for Sound Tribe Sector 9 in 2003, as a long time fan Putnam was overjoyed to watch the band set up, practice and pull together to perform a fantastic set. Finding that his vision of a happy medium between acoustic and electronic instrumentation could become a reality in a recording studio and on stage could in turn positively affect a huge group of listeners was a crucial turning point. With that experience as his primary basis for moving forward, Maetoba has shaped itself around the motivation to marry cutting edge technology and genres with an onstage show that only a number of musicians locking together on stage can provide.

In 2007 Maetoba performed live in support of electronic bands, DJs, pop-rock and jam-based acts performing in the Boston metro area and at Berklee College of Music where Putnam is preparing to graduate. Maetoba is an electronic instrumental act that blends genres and makes itself available to a wide audience. Putnam's flexibility onstage is evident with his ability to fluently morph between dance, ambient and funk feels allowing the Maetoba set to cater to many types of audiences and environments.

Currently Putnam finds himself locked away in his apartment writing and demoing new songs and performance techniques using alternative controllers (like audiocubes and monome) and incorporating new players into the live set he plans to take to the stage as soon as possible. He has also working on pre-production for the first official Maetoba video assistant directed by filmmaker Yari Wolinsky. Look forward to a video full of choreography and visual effects produced with a patch Putnam wrote using Cycling 74's Jitter software.

Maetoba is a musical project, recording artist and live show that looks to tap into multiple genres and audiences by providing an exhilarating live show and aesthetically pleasing environment, both visually and aurally. Enjoy!
