Bio

Maffie and Crew are a new wave of Caribbean musicians led by Ulan "Maffie" Atwell they call Vancouver, BC, home. Their presentations contain the many beats of the Caribbean and include dancehall, reggae and Soca from their 7 original independent CD releases. As Mr. Nigel noted "Their stage performance is incomparable to any other artist throughout the Lower Mainland Vancouver Canada. Each performance is filled with high energy and precision and contains a magnificent display of dance flavor, originality, versatility and creative musical interpretations."

Like fellow St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) recording artist Kevin Little, multitalented Ulan "Maffie" Atwell was born in Georgetown, SVG. His first original album, "Sweet Wine" in 1999 marked Maffie's entry into the Vancouver music scene as bandleader and vocalist. Since then, Maffie has produced music for several Caribbean musicians in Vancouver including Sam Hope and Family, Phase 111 Steel band, Fire Band and Out of Many One. In 2005 he completed his fifth CD "Represent" in collaboration with Ugandan Hip Hop artist, Silas Sajjabi. In addition to playing at various venues and festivals in the lower mainland and on Vancouver Island, Maffie and Crew performed with SVG international recording artists Becket (2002) and backup Winston Soso in (2003).

In addition to the Caribbean Days Festival, we are also regulars at various other music festivals in the Greater Vancouver area, and travel throughout Canada as headline and opening acts for various shows. Most recently, in the summer of 2008, Maffie & Crew was chosen as the opening act and the band to back Jamaica’s Leroy Sibbles. And the “Mighty” Tamlins and we backup internal Artist Sanell Dempster July 25th and 26th for the Caribbean Days Festival 2009, we play a wide verity of music original and cover Reggae, Soca, R&B, Zouk, Calypso and Dance hall.

Maffie and Crew are from diverse musical backgrounds and brought together by a shared kinship for the music of the Caribbean. The rhythm section is driven by Ivan Elva (St. Lucia) on drums and vocals, and Fando Bynoe on bass and backing vocals (SVG), and Rapper, vocalist and saxophonist Renita Drakes (Barbados).

Currently headquartered in Vancouver, BC, Maffie and Crew infuse their live performances with energy and power as they fly their Caribbean flags in unison and with pride. When they hit the stage you are in for another "high energy" performance. Samples of some of their pulsating rhythms are available on their website www.maffie.com. As Independent producers, Maffie and Crew recently released their largest album yet, "Grass Roots / Reload Part 1", which was followed by “Balance / Reload Part 2".
