Bio

Magani (Yoruba word meaning “native aphrodisiac”) is a multi-talented artist who became a part of the world of self-taught musicians in 1999. A daughter of Nigerian immigrants, by way of Brooklyn, NY, Magani grew up listening to a heavy dose of Afro-Beat, Hip Hop and Reggae. It was only after Magani traded in the hard knock streets of NYC to attend high school at a boarding school in rural Pomfret CT, that her love for writing and rock music emerged.

It was at Pomfret, where Magani's poetry was published nationally and where she fell in love with the likes of the Dave Matthews Band, Rusted Root, and Ani DiFranco.
While enrolled in New York University, Magani made a name for herself on the NYC poetry circuit which led her to perform at clubs & colleges across the East Coast and meet her soon-to-be band partner, Hakhi Alakhun. Maturing as a singer-songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist, Magani soon became one of the lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock soul band SYNAI. With SYNAI, Magani performed at renowned venues such as CBGB’s, Le Bar Bat, and the Midpoint Music Festival and went on to record her first EP, “AS IS.”

Now as a solo singer and musician, Magani’s mix of Pop, Rock and Soul will be hard to ignore. Though her image, vocal power, and musicianship may foster comparisons to Sheryl Crow or Lauryn Hill, her debut solo effort, "Native Aphrodisiac," is just one testament to how Magani can craftily blend gifted songwriting, talented instrumentation and a melange of musical influences into a melting pot that is global, yet solely her own.
