Bio

The Magellan Chamber Artists (MCA) take great joy navigating audiences of all ages through the depths of repertoire from Beethoven to bluegrass and Handel to hip-hop to the inspiring Musical Praises programs that have become the signature of Duo Intermezzo.

Evolving from its founding ensemble, the Magellan String Quartet, the MCA take its name from the Age of Discovery and Ferdinand Magellan, the great Portuguese explorer who led the first circumnavigation of the globe in Spain's quest to find a new and faster sea route to the Spice Islands in the East. Since 1993, the Magellan Chamber Artists have been on a quest to craft creative and multi-disciplinary ways to engage and guide audiences through musical explorations, which like spices, make the unfamiliar or perceptively bland more enjoyable and memorable. Concentrating on live performance, the MCA's activities range from informative concerts, collaborative community outreach programs, lecture recitals, to master classes and educational workshops.

From the complete cycles of celebrated composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to stylistically diverse programming such as "The Evolution of the String Quartet," "From Yesterday to Y2K," and "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed ... Theme and Variation in works from Pachelbel to Paart;" the Magellan Chamber Artists performs an extensive range of repertoire with varying instrumentation.

Playing together for nearly a decade, Duo Intermezzo, has been performing at various community events, weddings, and on regional concert series as part of an ongoing endeavor to foster live music performance with professional musicians throughout the southeast.

In its long residency with Georgia Southern University (Statesboro), the MCA's core ensemble—the Magellan String Quartet—has had the distinct pleasure of working with the creative and administrative staff at the Georgia Southern Museum in presenting concerts for the campus community, families and area elementary school students. Of these programs, "Musical Mazes," "Global Navigation," and "Tin Pail Tales" are among the Magellan Chamber Artists' favorites.
