Wer sich die Musik von Magnetfisch anhört, dem wird gleich von mehreren Seiten Nostalgie zugefächelt. Die zarten Beats aus dem Personalcomputer erinnern an eine Zeit, als beseelte Popmusik noch Trip-Hop genannt wurde, die schwermütigen Gitarren gemahnen eher an die zukunftsskeptische Romantik der Achtzigerjahre, und da sind auch Spurenelemente des Synthie-Pop aus selbiger Epoche auszumachen. Magnetfisch already exist since 1998, and from a duo, which originally played instrumental music with roots in the 80ies New Wave, they became an outright band after two beautiful albums. Still, they let their roots shine through and do not deny them at all. Thanks to the singer Seline Kunz, the instrumental compositions became full-blown songs with catchy tunes that will find lots of fans amongst aficionados of good old New Wave. Although the music is electronic in its structure, I personally rather see the incisive guitar sounds, which remind me of giants like The Durutti Column, And Also The Trees and The Cure. The congenial voice of Seline Kunz contributes to make botox a very beautiful single, leaving us waiting impatiently for new songs. A few bands succeed in developing themselves and truly taking a step forward. For most, development stops here: experience has been gained, but without real progress. Magnetfisch, who have become a quartet since, are a noticeable exception. In the past they proved expressively that they were able to compose moving, calm and melodious instrumental arrangements. The original duo made of Timothée Barrelet (keyboards, programming) and Patrick Scherrer (guitar) was rejoined by bass player Rolf Althaus and singer Seline Kunz. She eventually gives a charismatic visage to the band’s compositions and completes the instrumentals with a voice which perfectly fits in. In the wide worlds between synth pop and new wave, Magnetfisch have sort of created an own segment by combining guitars and synthesizers in their own way. The lead track, “botox”, is simultaneously buoyant and harmonious and accentuates Seline Kunz’s distinctive voice. In my opinion, “poisonous trace” is the best song of the single, pricking one’s ears with its melodies and by the singing. The change of speed towards the end is impressive, and the voice reminds me Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie And The Banshees) at times, with a hint of Marion Küchenmeister (Invisible Limits). "Footloose and Steady" is by no means inferior to its predecessor, with the awe-inspiring bass playing by Rolf Althaus coming to the fore.

Magnetfisch are making electronic music, but not your usual electronic music as the central point of this Swiss band is creating moods and they do it with the most effective thing there is, using guitarlines from coldwave....so yes, if you are wondering how "Seventeen Seconds" by The Cure would have sounded if Robert and Co. had decided to make it an electronic piece of art it would have sounded a bit like magnetfisch!!! Honestly said I really was moved by it especially as in some ways it comes very close to what Vini Reilly did with The Durutti Column. Maybe it's a bit typical for Swiss alternative artists that they keep on hanging on that coldwavesound from the eighties but for me this is just a bonus.... MAGNETFISCH, die sich im Jahre 1998 zusammengefunden hat, besteht seit letztem Jahr aus drei Leuten, ein Gitarrist ist dauerhaft hinzugekommen. Das zweite Album ist nunmehr erschienen und präsentiert das, was man auf dem Debut „Fruchtkönig“ bereits zelebriert hat. Wunderbare, durchweg instrumentale Wohlfühlmusik, die man sowohl nebenbei, als auch konzentriert hören kann. Herrliche Popkompositionen, die mir immer wieder sehr luftig-leicht vorkommen und sich auf das Gemüt auswirken. Als Anspieltips würde ich „Raumstift“ nominieren sowie „Science Friction“ und „Glacenkampf“ wegen der wunderschönen Gitarren, die in ihren besten Momenten ein bisschen nach The Cure klingen, nur irgendwie ein bisschen glatter und sanfter. - Backagain.de

Die dreiköpfige Multikultiband Magnetfisch legt uns dieser Tage ihr schon vor einiger Zeit erschienenes Album „Silence Fiction“ vor. Timothée Barrelet (Keys), Rolf Althaus (Bass) sowie Patrick Scherrer (Gitarre) versüssen unsere Ohren mit reiner Instrumentalmusik. Diese gestaltet sich, was unweigerlich am Equipment liegt, als genialer musikalischer Aufguss der 80er Jahre im Filmgewand. Soll heissen, wenn es mal einen Film über die 80er geben sollte, wären Magnetfisch die beste Sounduntermalung, die das ganze Objektiv unterstreichen könnte, was für diese Musik (Zeit) eigentlich wichtig war. Neben leichten elektronischen Einsätzen, wissen die Jungs vor allem mit den leichten Gitarren und Basssounds ein gewisses Ambiente zu erzeugen und uns damit zu beglücken. Toll, man schwelgt in seinen jungen Jahren und kann förmlich den Geist dieser etwas minimalen Zeit wieder auferleben lassen. Nachdem man Magnetfisch konsumiert hat, hat man auch unweigerlich Lust wieder alte Cure Sachen zu hören, natürlich kommt auch der Gedanke Tangerine Dream auf... wegen dem Instrumentalcharackter und so... - Synthetics
