"Wellesley's Macdonald Packs Punch's"

“I heard that I was the hottest solo act on campus,” Maia Macdonald ’06 said in the interlude of her first song Friday night at Punch’s Alley. Singing and alternating between two guitars, with Erin Krizay ’06 intermittently accompanying her on the cello, Macdonald gradually drew a crowd that filled up the campus’ Friday night hangout. Anything but a stranger to the stage, Macdonald has undoubtedly gained a faithful following of fans who yelled for an encore at the end of the set. Krizay commented afterward that, “Maia is awesome . . . it was a pleasure to perform with her.” The duo plans to perform another gig sometime later in the semester, also in Punch’s Alley. For those who enjoy Lisa Loeb with a little more oomph, Macdonald’s completely self-produced CD, “The Atlantic” (Winter 2005), is on sale. - Wellesley News, Wellesley, MA

Bio

Maia Macdonald began her career as a composer and performer at the age of 9. Now 22, Maia, a recent graduate of Wellesley College, took her act to New York City in the summer 2006. Maia fuses traditional "folk" with electronica, jazz, and world music (taking specific inspiration from Haiti, Brazil,India, and Iraq.) She studied classical music theory and history, has traveled to Haiti to study folkloric music and drumming, and served as the drum captain of a Boston-based Haitian & Brazilian Drum and Dance Ensemble. She has served as program director and folk and world music genre directors for radio WZLY in Wellesley Massachussets.
She has twice set up camp in her tiny dorm room to record and mix two self-produced albums - "October" (2002) and "The Atlantic" (2005). Maia consistently packed shows in Wellesley and has developed a fan base in the Boston, San Francisco, and New York areas. Maia Macdonald has opened for Edie Carey, Meg Hutchinson, Meg Tuohey, the Divine Maggees, and The Weepies (Deb Talan & Steve Tannen) and has performed with Brown Bird and Our Lady of Bells. In 2006 she formed the record label "Kid In The Attic Records" in order to independently produce and release her records. She is currently performing in New York City and working on a new CD slated for release in early 2007.
