The best kept secret in music

"Desert Gold grabs your attention from the first drumbeats, and keeps it with strong, but sweet, vocals overlaid on dynamic, groove-oriented rock. The guitars weave their magic through hard-driving instrumental riffs balanced by Aria's pretty-in-pink pop vocals. This song has it all, blending great playing, singing, arrangement and high production values into a catchy tune that makes you want to move, and I truly dig it. My playlist on SongPlanet Radio frequently includes Desert Gold and other Maika songs."

Feeling a bit camera shy

Whimsical yet tough, unpredictable yet undeniably catchy. Maika mixes metaphors with a vengeance and not only gets away with it… they do it with class, wit and just a touch of wickedness!

Hailing from Norway, Maika is comprised of vocalist Aria (also a professional dancer), guitarists Micro and Espen, bassist Dag and drummer Teodor. This Nordic quintet has wowed audiences from the Arctic Circle to Athens, where they were a featured act at the Norway in Athens Festival in the spring of 2007. The band has already won fans throughout the world; the Ultimate Band List (UBL) has listed Maika at the top on its pop, rock and Top 100 charts.

The music of Maika takes some surprising turns - it is by no means your mother's rock'n'roll. Unusual vocal lines and harmonies mix with a continually percolating rhythm section punctuated with distinctive guitar lines. And that voice… Aria's unique delivery and totally original melodic sensibility takes on diverse lyrical subjects with just the right mix of humor and edginess.

Maika's debut album "Radiation Refill" (due out early 2008) features songs such as "Desert Gold," a unexpected mix of suspense and soaring vocals where Aria encourages the listener to "look for pleasure" …then screams out to "watch your back!" This compelling lyrical contradiction creates a tension that hooks the listener as surely as any of the well-crafted choruses. The video for "Desert Gold" is also in post-production right now, directed by Beck`s puppeteer Rob Saunders. And yes, the video will contain some brilliant puppet acting, shot at amazing locations just outside Los Angeles.

"Felix" is another favorite. The deceptively feel-good groove tells the story of Maika's namesake, an outer-space heroine from a cult 1970s Czechoslovakian children's show. Quite a reach for a twenty-first century Norwegian band, but with Maika it all winds up making perfect sense.
