"Enjoy Mailbox Baseball…No Felony Necessary"

Pop Quiz: What’s a perfect compliment to spending your birthday with great friends?
If you answered ‘finding a new great band’, you would be correct. Don’t worry, ‘alcohol’ was also a front runner.
That band for this birthday is Mailbox Baseball. Although they are in our Punk/Screamo section (they definitely are not the latter), I almost want to say they channel equal parts of Sublime and Virginia Coalition on a song such as ‘Sticks’. There is just something about some of the guitar parts and overall sound that reminds me of those two bands. Not to say that’s a bad thing.
Now in regards to songs like the one embedded below (’Stockyard Station’), that throws a pop-punk vibe into the mix as well. There’s an interesting mix of song types on their two albums, Diminishing and Forward in Motion. They are definitely different than the other bands on the site for the simple fact that there is such a difference in the two styles.
The blurb on their MySpace describes the band like this:
Mailbox Baseball started as a weekly cooking club in the year 2007. Many a burnt lemon meringue pies were sacrificed trying to come up with the perfect recipe. Still, the group felt they were on to something and forged forward, traveling distant lands and tweaking the ingredients as necessary. This group of now seasoned professionals can be frequently spotted at local county fairs and are known to never turn down the opportunity for a good cook off. Somewhere along the lines, they also decided to start playing music.
Although Mailbox Baseball is pretty hard to classify, they are definitely worth a listen. Their MySpace player has a good number of tracks on it, so you will definitely be able to get a good feel for just what their sound is comparable to.
And maybe if you get lucky, a purchase of their album and/or apparel will get you a free pie.
