One of South Jersey’s finest emerging talents, MaineSt Monty (real name Jermaine Montiel Sistrunk Jr) is making a brand for himself with his impressive lyrical ability and a socially conscious persona. Born and raised in Salem, New Jersey, MaineSt Monty was destined for a hip-hop trajectory because his father was a rapper and also an unofficial hip-hop historian. This musical upbringing eventually led Monty to mature from rapping in the school cafeteria to producing for himself and rhyming uniquely over both vintage rap sounds and progressive trap beats: creating a new East Coast, modern twist on his influences such as Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Kanye West, J. Cole, and Drake. MaineSt Monty’s life experiences also inform his lyrical content, from the struggle of living in Section 8 housing, to his mother’s muscle disease, to his own battle to overcome a speech issue. After having been shaped by these hardships, and also performing during his high school years locally, MaineSt. Monty graduated trade school and emerged as a full time artist with singles in 2019. His Yasuke project in 2020 further highlighted his unique voice and perspective on the modern world, and, with the forthcoming release of his upcoming album For The Meanwhile, MaineSt Monty will be a major player on the East Coast and in hip-hop in general for years to come.
