Mainstreet Exit's 'My Favorite Song' is the theme song for the game and the commercial for Dashboard Rock!

[ Cool parents rock out with Mazda ]

June 12, 2008 | By Kristin Laird

Mazda Canada is putting Canadians in the driver’s seat as it targets young families with its latest online game, “Dashboard Rock,” to promote its Mazda5 crossover vehicle.

The game, created by Doner Canada and Hooplah Inc. at dashboardrock.ca, is an extension of the Mazda5 “Never Lose Your Cool” campaign launched in 2005.

Consumer research found the target market isn’t ready to surrender to a minivan and reacted negatively to the soccer-mom image.“They didn’t believe that their ‘cool’ status needed to change as a result of having a family, and that’s the unique space that this vehicle has been able to provide,” said Brent Rivard, vice-president and national account director at Doner.

Dashboard Rock is meant to appeal to this audience in an entertaining way, while promoting Mazda5, said Rivard. The game lets users rock out to songs provided by Universal Music Canada. Users create a player profile by uploading their picture onto a bobblehead, and try to play one minute of a selected song by using the keys on their computer.

Once users complete a song, they “drive” to the next Canadian landmark in their Mazda5, where they are required to play a new song. Players can download the song for free after successfully completing the route. They can also send electronic postcards to friends. The card, which includes a voice message authored by the user, can be uploaded to sites like MySpace and Facebook.

Five of the songs in the game are from Canadian bands that played in the Mazda Muzik Tour–an across-the-country search for musical talent.

Banner ads and expandable video units placed on various social networks drive people to the game, which launched earlier this week and will run over the next year.

"Main Men"

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Four-piece rock band Mainstreet Exit is headed for great things, says lead singer Max Long, but no matter where it goes, the band really identifies with Cape Breton. Mainstreet Exit is currently in pre-production for its first full-length CD and is preparing for a show in Glace Bay, tonight at the St. Anne's hall, on a bill with Ill Scarlett, "who was just nominated for a Juno, so it's really exciting to be opening for them," said Long. The band started in 2006 with Long (rhythm guitar/vocals) and his brother Jude (drums), both from Port Hawkesbury, and Luke Fougere (bass/vocals) of Harve Boucher. Last year, the band added Mike Hearn (lead guitar) of Mulgrave. "Mike had always been a friend of ours and we knew adding a guitar would boost our sound," said Long. "We didn't really have to rewrite anything, it just thickened up the tracks. The new stuff has been written with a lot more rock and guitar." Lone cited a lengthy and eclectic mix of influences, including the Beatles, Blink 182, Metallica, and Green Day. The band's sound is even affected by a bluesman John Campbelljohn. "I've known him since I was really young", Long said. "My dad use to manage a band with John Campbelljohn and he's always been a major influence on me, especially with the guitar work." With that kind of background, Long said the band's sound can be described as "1970's rock and roll at 1,000 miles an hour." Last year, the band kicked off its first tour acriss Atlantic Canada, and sold our its entire stock of a four-track EP titled "The Girl Best Dressed." In December, the band started recording at Denmark Productions in Halifax, with award-winning engineer/producer (and Juno Judge) Dennis Field, on a full-length CD titled "The World Is Yours". The CD, is currently in pre-production at Smashbox Studios in Deminion, is expected to be released July 1 and will be followed by a tour in Ontario to promote the new disc. Mainstreet Exit, which was featured on an episode of Much Music a year ago, has also been invited to tour the Much studio and meet with one of its producers during the summer tour. Long's brother is in Grade 11, but the others have all graduated from high school. Soon, though, the band members fully intend to make music a full-time gig. "Next year, after Jude graduates, we're going all-out with the band," said Long. "were do we thing we're headed? To the top. We're going to ONtario this summer and then short-track it to New York." In the meantime, all four are working part-time jobs at places like Tim Hortons and A&W in order to finance their recordings. "We all work meaningless jobs for the job that means a lot," said Long. Regardless of where music takes the band, Mainstreet Exit will always remember its roots, said Long. "We always call ourselves a Cape Breton band," he said. "All Cape Breton shows are always great. There's lots of music in Cape Breton. "We love playing all over Cape Breton. Kids here seem to have more fun than anywhere else."

Dear Max & Jude,

Thanks for submitting the material for the evaluation.

I enjoyed listening to the songs. They had a nice energy to them that tells me you're probably a very strong live act.

As you read above, you scored well on the evaluation. One tip I could give you would be to work on a better guitar sound. The playing was really good, but the tone and sound could use some work, just to bring it up a notch.

To give you insight to the scoring scale above, the majority
of artists score in the 2.5 to 3.5 range in the various categories.

Whenever an artist sees a 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 or 3.5 as a score in a certain category (or categories) it means that's an area I feel they need to improve and develop.

When someone sees 4, 4.5 or 5 as their score in a category, that tells them, to me, they are in the professional league and have strong potential. It's a validation from a pro, letting you know you are doing a fine job.

Every artist should work hard to earn 4.5 to 5 in every category.

It's a very competitive business and people averaging in the 3's (or less) will probably not get too far without a great deal of improvement and development.

I don't give out 4's and 5's easily, so any of those you see, you have earned. Well done!

One thing to keep in mind, at least for your songs designated as "Singles" (the songs geared towards winning over radio stations and record company executives) - try to keep Intros to under 10 seconds and try to reach the Chorus between the 40 and 43 second mark.

If it's 44 seconds or longer and the Chorus did not kick in yet, you should edit the song's arrangement accordingly.

In rap music, the chorus can come in at the 55 to 58 second mark or so, since the verses are traditionally longer, compared to pop and rock music.

For a free resource of helpful information, I encourage you to visit the "Press & Media" section of my Web site, http://www.FoleyEntertainment.com

You will see links to four television interviews that are filled with advice and tips that may be of help to you.

If you are trying to gain the attention of record companies, music publishers, booking agents or top managers, make sure your game plan includes radio promotion, publicity, lots of gigs, Internet marketing and CD sales, at the minimum.

Just having a great CD and live show are no longer enough in today's music business.

Also - on the Sonicbids Web site, the only choices the system gave me were -- "Selected" "Standby" or "Not Selected."

So I chose "Selected" for your submission, as it was the best of the three choices.

For the Foley Entertainment opportunity, none of those categories really apply, because EVERYONE qualifies for the professional evaluation and feedback.

It's more of an educational opportunity for everyone who submits - not a contest where only a select few will win or benefit.

I guess the majority of the Sonicbids opportunities are for contests, festivals and things like that, where some artists are chosen and some are not.

Thank you for the submission guys and continued best wishes!

Keep me posted! You're doing a fine job and being so young, I was impressed by how well you scored on the evaluation.

Best wishes,

Eugene Foley

"Message from the Premier of NS"

Dear Max, Jude, Luke, and Mike:

Congratulations on winning the Mazda Muzik Tour 2008 to represent Atlantic Canada. Between this win and your hard work on tour and the exposure of venues like Much Music, as your soon-to-be-released CD says, "The world is yours".

I know you will make our region proud as the contest to uncover Canada’s best undiscovered band comes to a close. I hope you are chosen and get the chance not only to be the opening act for the Sam Roberts Band, but are able to attract even more national attention and, of course, more fans to buy your music.

I also wish you the best of luck with your tour across Ontario this summer. As you know, it’s hard work, but it pays off.

Good luck and my vote is in.

Sincerely,

Rodney J. MacDonald, Premier

A Band of Brothers!

Mainstreet Exit was formed in August 2006 in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Brothers Max and Jude Long asked their buddies Luke Fougere and Mike Hearn to join them on their musical journey. This hard working young band has been featured on Much Music, they were acknowledged by Rob Dyer (Skate4Cancer founder) on MTV Live, Mick Mashbir (Alice Coopers Million Dollar Babies guitarist) sang their praises and to top it off they won Top Unsigned Band in Atlantic Canada in March 2008.

Mainstreet Exit has shared the stage with some of Canada's greats including, Faber Drive, Ten Second Epic, Tupelo Honey, Marianna's Trench, Crush Luther, Bobby Cameron, Paper Lions, Joel Plaskett, and many more Canadian touring bands.

On June 9th Mazda Canada partnered with Universal Records to produce an online video game and asked Mainstreet Exit to submit a song for consideration to be in the game. A short while later the boys were informed that the games creative team picked Mainstreet Exits 'My Favorite Song' as the theme song for the game and for the commercial to advertise the game. (Watch the video ad in our video section, its funny!) The video game ad is now running on MSN featuring one of their songs!.

With an ambitious touring schedule, a high energy stage performance, a sound all their own and a desire to play, these guys are a blast to see and hear.

Their debut CD "The world is yours' was recorded at Denmark Productions in Halifax, NS with Producer/Juno Judge, Dennis Field. Their first single '3:AM' was released world wide on Nexus Radio Europe on July 1st, 2008.

'The world is yours' summer tour took MSE to Quebec and Ontario where they were featured on YouMag TV in Toronto, invited to tour Much Music and sit in on a show (MOD). The boys were offered a reality show spot by Much for 2009.
New Jersey entertainment lawyer to the stars Eugene Foley (40 gold records and 3 grammy's) gave them a 'validation from a pro' plug as 'being there even at their young age'.
Listen to their tunes on Sonicbids and play the video game at www.dashboardrock.ca.
