Bio

Acclaimed by the specialised critics, Maíra Freitas has made her CD debut through Biscoito Fino Records. Produced by her sister Mart’nália (singer and songwriter), the young singer has surrounded herself with top quality musicians, building a well-thought repertoire with her own songs which reflect her personality. Daughter of one of all-time biggest names of samba and Brazilian popular music, Martinho da Vila, Maíra arrives at the scene with a veteran’s security, immediately imprinting her own personal style, which is at one time classical and popular.

Aged 25, Maíra says she can’t remember not playing the piano: at 6, she asked her mother for her first instrument. Pink and adorned with Hello Kitty stickers, the little piano was the first step towards a solid education as an instrumentalist and composer. With a degree from the UFRJ’s Music School, she has studied classical piano with Maria Teresa Madeira, Luis de Moura Castro, Andrea Botelho and Elza Schachter. As a concert pianist, she has played at several distinguished stages such as Rio de Janeiro’s Theatro Municipal and the Brazilian Music Conservatory. Abroad, Maíra has played in Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Norway, Germany, Argentina and the USA. She has refined her popular piano skills with the masters Cristovão Bastos, Leandro Braga, Marcos Nimrichter and Sheila Zagury.

The young pianist, after having had a classical education, has developed a taste for Brazilian popular music and loves Chico Buarque, Gonzaguinha, Nana Caymmi, Paulinho da Viola and her father Martinho da Vila, among others of its masters. Currently, she is successfully presenting her new concert all around the country with her band, which includes: Humberto Mirabelli in the guitar, Zé Luis Maia in the acoustic bass, Joana Queiroz in the brass, André Siqueira in the percussion and Cassius Theperson in the drums.
